I knew we were getting screwed but...

Post by OU818 » Tue Jan 31, 2012 12:07 am

This is ridiculous!

I'm hunting around for a closed back 8ohm 2x12 to pair with my Hellcat combo and am after something fairly decent like a Mesa, Bogner, Suhr or Cornford however these can be fairly difficult to get in Australia. Unfortunately Orange is ruled out due to the 8ohm mono requirement.

Looking at a Mesa Boogie Rectifier Horizontal 2x12 in Aus and the best price I could find was $1,300 on eBay and $1,600 in store. Even second hand was over $1k.

I then stumble across Thomann.de...

$800AUD delivered by DHL Express!!

I always say that I won't buy an amp or guitar without playing it first; luckly I have no such restrictions on Mesa Speaker Cabs.

No wonder Australian retail is dying.

Thomann is great, their cheap shipping rate (for under 30kgs) makes a huge difference

+1 for Thomann, bought a lot of gear from them while living in Europe and they were always top notch. Of course, coming from the states I could never get over how MUCH stuff cost over there, so I am glad you are getting the opposite effect!!

Imported gear is terribly expensive.

In the UK/Europe, Mesa Boogie is much more expensive than Orange Gear - whereas states side, it's decently affordable.

I guess Australia is FAR FAR away, making everything costs so much more.

Any local instrument/amp makers in OZ?

Mesa Boogies are really cheap over here. I paid 900$ for a 2008 Dual Rectifier 3 channels in mint condition.

yeah, mesas are everywhere here, and they're so cheap. i could get a Rec or just about anything else for the same used price as my rocker 30 used.

Yep, and they price according to retail.
A quote for a similar cab as an Orange CB was to set me back $1,200 by a local builder.

Pffft, if you think Australia is bad, you should check out prices in New Zealand. Wallet raping is prolific here. There's only 2 music retail chains here now, and they don't stock the same brands, so there's zero competition.

man, those prices are crazy.

things work different in the u.s.

shipping and distribution is highly sophisticated. i know a guy that deals in uk equipment on a very large volume. he warehouses tons of marshalls and voxes, and moves it out every day on a steady basis. he's trying to do the same with orange.

its complicated. the maker needs to be able to supply. then, a distribution system is required to the retailer, or to directly to the customer, depending on the method.

during desert storm and other u.s. conflicts the government consulted with wal mart on how to move stuff around efficiently.

a crude thermometer is the number of trucks [18 wheelers] on the road. the more you see, the cheaper stuff is.
