I have two Les Pauls. One has a Seymour Duncan SH-2n Jazz in the neck and a SH-4 JB in the bridge. The Jazz is pretty good but the JB is amazing. Highly recommended for hard rock! My second guitar has a Tom Anderson H1- in the neck and a H3+ in the bridge. These are less known than the Seymour Duncan's but man I love them! They are the exact same pickups Billy Howerdel from A Perfect Circle uses. They are smooth, articulate, and have great bottom end.

I love my Gibson LP Traditional with classic 57's
That guitar makes all my others seem like junk really.

I much prefer 57's in a Trad compared to 490/498's in a LP Studio....amesav wrote:Im pretty sure they are the gibson 490r 498t.Mine was built in 1995OrangePaul wrote:I love my Gibson LP Traditional with classic 57's

How much that is down to the weightier guitar though rather than the pickups, I don't know.
I think output wise they are pretty similar....
Gibson 496/500T's are the hottest pickup Gibson do output level wise which might suit if you are looking for more Gain but I've never heard a set in a Les Paul. I think traditionally Gibson used them in their Flying V

Re: gibson les paul users
I had a 2006 LP Standard with Burstbucker Pro's, thought they were OK, a little bright maybe ... In my 2010 Traditional I had, the stock PUPs were a 57 Classic (neck) and a 57 Classic + (bridge) ... I liked them, but I did change the 300k pots to 500k and installed Orange Drop caps ... I had a R9 with the Burstbucker 2 and 3, these aren't wax potted, so if your playing loud and high gain, they can be microphonic, of course I guess you could wax pot them if you wanted ... I had an Supreme, a Class 5, and an Elegant, but I did not check to see what PUPs were in them when I had them. I guess you could say I like Gibson Les Pauls ... My favorite Les Paul, for the price, is the Traditional ...
Below, in my sig, is my rig now ... I would not trade my R8 unless I was starving and homeless, well definately starving ... I love the Marshallheads (they are also specially wax potted) for what I play (Heavy) ... Wolfe took time to talk to me about what I played and what rig I had ...
I definitely think your selection of PUPs would depend on your guitar and what type of music you play ...

I Strongly recommend Suhr's pickups. I have yet to hear better sounding pickups, especially hummbuckers. The tonal difference between my Les Paul's Seymore Duncan and my Suhr's Suhr pickups in astounding. The Suhrs kill the SDs at all levels of clean, overdrive, and distortion.
I would look into the SSH+ for the bridge for heavier stuff, and the DSV for cleaner neck tones.

I'm a 57 classic guy, myself. They are just the perfect pickup for so many styles of music IMO, especially when they are in an SG or LP

I try really hard to like P-90's but I play high gain stuff and the friggin' HHHUUUMMM drives me crazy! Granted at gig volumes you can't tell but practicing at home it drives me nuts.baytamusic wrote:P90s in mine w/ the Orange. Once you try it you won't go back.

Burstbuckers. They are probably what are already in your paul. They have more character and bite than all the "high output" pick ups I have ever played. If you can't make a burstbucker put out the most brutal of tones, then it is probably your amp that sucks.

Re: gibson les paul users
'57's and Burstbuckers are both great.
If I was going to mix and match I'd go with a '57 in the neck and a BB in the bridge...
