vote for the best second chair
since we're having so much fun.....
name your vote for the person that is not the front of the band, but is essential to the sound and/or success. in law, we call it second chair.
i'll kick off again..
michael anthony. van halen. his vocals are absolutely spot on. while he cannot sing lead, and i've heard him try, his backups are absolutely dead-on perfect. his tenor range fits the band like a glove. the band would not have had the success without his backing vocals.
cheers,

Re: vote for the best second chair
Awesome! I already love this thread.
My second chair vote goes to: Richie Sambora. Need I say more??
Well maybe. Just like in Van Halen's band, sambora makes amazing vocals to Bon Jovi which would not sound the same without him for sure. And his guitars are sometimes even catchier than the vocal hooks.

i was also debating jimmy dewar with robin trower. it really should've been called the jimmy dewar band, featuring robin trower.

just to say, this is an epic idea for a thread!...
angus young, i think he was in acdc wasn't he? possibly better known than bon scott or brian johnson. the kind of music they make, it's as if he is the frontman.

i think you picked the top guy, really. no fault to you; who wouldn't. but angus young really is acdc for most of us bastardds.mr_william wrote:just to say, this is an epic idea for a thread!...

but it makes one think; who really makes it work.
i think the question really takes the focus off the front singer and or guitar man.
allen collins - lynyrd skynyrd. yep. he had lots of leads but he set the rhythm for the band. he had the chords going that sounded so good.
of course i guess my favorite example is derek st. holmes during the 70's nugent years.

Re: vote for the best second chair
i agree, as much as he isnt the conventional 'front man' in the singer's role, which is how i chose to interprit it in this case... he's still the face of the band for the most of us, which is very interesting! not many guitarists are considered 'the face of the band', it is usually the singer.sidvicious wrote:i think you picked the top guy, really. no fault to you; who wouldn't. but angus young really is acdc for most of us bastardds.mr_william wrote:just to say, this is an epic idea for a thread!...

the whole "he isn't in the second chair" argument is why i gave him a mention to be honest! i find interesting that he's managed to be the face, without being the lead singer - not many people have done that!

Lou Barlow! Dinosaur jr is awesome in any form but not anywhere near as good without Lou.
