best "first amp" for a kid...?
my son is ready to step up to an amplified instrument and I'd like to get him something that doesn't totally suck.
my largest concern is that he not be able to damage his hearing (like I did on saturday... walked into a standing wave during a cymbal roll..... faaaaaaaaaaaack)
anyone got any great ideas?
I really have no clue outside of getting a micro terror and putting a stop on the MV at like 2.
I'm not stuck on Orange, would like a "real" amp... be it a Vox, Barfshall, (please not a fender), or whatever...
a 1-2W tube combo would actually be fun... maybe a Blackstar HT-1R?

Carvin Vintage 16! To be had for about $300-$400, and it'll do gigs too! Don't be surprised if you find yourself stealing it...

I'd say the new Microterror would be great for that.
Also the Crush Pix are fairly decent SS amps. But I'd recommend a modeler - the Fender Mustang II is pretty killer and will give him a better idea of the kind of amp he might want in the future.

For a first amp I'd really go with a Fender Mustang. A few effects to play with and some really decent models to play with. Even the Marshall setting isn't bad. Would have liked one when I started.

Roland micro cube!
I got one 2 weeks ago. Cost £80 new. Fecking awesome! Does everything and sounds wicked at low volumes.
It has amp modelling, delay, reverb, chorus, flange, phaser, tremolo.
This has stopped me buying another tube amp so far as its so good.

Hate to say it - but a Line 6 Spider combo would be cool probably. You got the tuner built in and plenty of effects and models on board to play with, and that should keep him interested in screwing around!

I took back my line 6 spider and swapped it for the cube. Best choice I ever made!

I'm all for the Roland Cube. I have one and use it every day as a practice amp.

Ive got a fender g-dec I use for practice sometimes. TBH, Ive heard better tone out of other modelling amps, but I love all the built in backing tracks...thats what sold me on it.

i second that. amazing clean channel, and some of their sims aren't bad. the vox and tweed ones are super nice!!! my first amp was a cube 30, and then I "upgraded" to a Line 6 now the line 6 collects dust and the roland is my amp at church.Captain Wedge wrote:I'm all for the Roland Cube.
