G12T75 speakers, do they really suck that bad?

Post by DiabloS » Fri Dec 02, 2011 6:22 pm

So I tested out my Rocker 30 last night at a gig for the first time. The cabs were provided and I had no choice but to use them. It was a Marshall 4X12 with G12T75 speakers and I was kinda disappointed with how the Rocker 30 sounded compared to how good it sounds either at home or while jamming with my own cabs. The other band used a Marshall DSL which I've owned before and don't really like all that much, but honestly there wasn't much difference in quality of tone to my ears between their DSL and my Rocker 30... as much as I hate saying it. I know speaker tone is subjective and all.. but does anyone else have any experience with the G12T75 making their Orange amp sound far more crappy than it should? I'm just hoping I can blame the lacklustre tone on the speakers and not the amp really! I just found my usually articulate crunch was just really muddy compared to usual.

you're not alone. G12T75s have a very prominent scoop--which is fine for Taming overly bright or middy Marshalls, but not for Orange. though...there's a few people who do like the G12T75s. but i like to think they're in the minority ;)

Yeah, they work for thrash stuff, but not a lot else.

I dont know what speakers you normally use....but the ones you mention are brighter, and tighter than the vintage 30 in the orange cabs. Less middy also.

Its not my favorite speaker. I prefer the vintage 30 if I have to pick one speaker over the other, but I didnt mind it either. Definitely not a "muddy" sounding speaker(the gt12). It would be good for metal riffing.

the V30 just sounds fuller.

You talking about the JCM 2000 DLS amp/head? Been a while since I played one, but it was my favorite marshall I ever played. I tried a JVM and a vintage modern and probably would have had more fun throwing those down the steps. I didnt find those amps to be very clear or articulate at all.

Thanks for the replies, it's comforting to know other people dislike that speaker too. I'm pretty sure it was the speakers since I've played that same venue before with my DT and my own cab and it sounded far better. I usually use Eminence Texas Heats, although I just ordered a Private Jack for the Rocker 30 since I thought it needed a slightly brighter speaker. I still like the Rocker a tad more than the DT so far, but I'm hoping I can pair it up with the right speaker once I get the Private Jack!

My first cab was an Ampeg 4x12 loaded with G12T75s. When I got it, I knew nothing about cabs or different speakers. I spent years trying to get sounds I didn't hate out of my amps and failing. Later when I got an Engl 4x12 loaded with VIntage 30s, I discovered it wasn't the amps I didn't like.

I don't know how much of that could have been the cab, but the complaints I've heard about G12T75s matched my experience: harsh, shrill, pretty much good for making abrasive metal guitar stand out.

when getting my tiny terror, i tried it through a marshall 1960a which is the cab i had at the time... it didnt sound great to say the least, which convinced me to sell the cab.

they;re not so efficient compared to the v30's either... which if your using a high powered head, could be a good thing i guess... allowing you to turn the amp up a little more whilst being slightly quieter.

My (old) 1960A cab was my favorite cab for 10 years, it was so smooth sounding, the speakers were well broken in, that helps. But, I then only played Marshallamps. Since I have some Orangeamps, that cab has been sold and I now have a Orange PPC412 with V30's.
Orange-amps are very picky on speakers, and they sound best with their own orangecabs, they just match.

The G12T75's are great speakers for marshalls, just turn those mids waaaaaaaayyyy up and keep on rollin'..

Hey! I use a 1960A cab with my OD120 and I think it sounds great! That being said, I am trying to get back into V30 territory...as I do think that would be optimal.

But I don't get the harsh thing that everyone talks about. To me, with my guitar and head, the 75s don't sound harsh at all.
