great read!!!

i think i will actually forward this to my gf, who is a struggling entry level marketer. she jsut got a gig at a large-scale printing firm, but it took her a YEAR out of college, a full 365 days of tireless interviewing and applying to even get that, and the pay isnt great. she was overexperienced for internships, and underexperienced (not enough internships) for entry or mid-level positions.

this is a good story about how there ARE sucess stories out there. she wants to get into event planning/artist relations. she has great taste and is good at all that, so this might inspire her. we figured with an int'l business/minor in marketing/latin america concentration that moving to austin would be a good move. crazy.

I was lucky for sure. Also, it was great timing. Orange USA is growing quickly and I basically just keep filling positions that need to be "flushed out." Then we hire someone in that position and I move on to the next thing.

Your gf's college experience is great. ESPECIALLY the Latin American concentration. If I had it all to do over again, I would have done business with an accounting concentration. THOSE are the people who really run things. Once you understand the money aspect, the world is your oyster :-)

I didn't realize how young Alex was. That is pretty awesome than an internship turned into a career. That basically never happens any more.

Youngblood,
Once your GF gets her foot in the door it is usually all downhill from there (given that she does a good job).

In most design and advertising jobs you basically HAVE to intern for a while before anyone is going to give you anything. At least that's been my experience and most of the people that I went to school with. It's that old "we want someone with experience" thing. Luckily my internship right out of school was paid, and I shorty there after went straight to a small ad agency.

I like how Shiner Bock is part of your "gear", Youngblood. I hope you've tried their Octoberfest. Definitely delicious.
