How Much Do You Practice?
I've always been curious about what everyone's practicing habits are on the forum. How much time do you spend practicing every day? And what are some good exercises or practicing tips that you've come up with?
I usually practice for 2 hours everyday after school, and sometimes more after I've finished my work and spent time outside.
A cool little practice tip I've found is finger twister:
e--------------4----2---------------------]
b--------1----3----3----5----------------]
g---4----2----2----4----4----2----6-----]
d---3----3----1----5----3----3----5-----]
a---2----4---------------2----4----4-----]
E---1--------------------------5----3-----]
To play this, set a metronome at around 80 and play each chord on the 1 and 3 beat. Continue this pattern up to the 12 fret, then go back down.
I use it as a warm up before every show I play.
Does anyone else have any cool practice tips?

When I was 18 to 21, i probably averaged 1 to 2 hours practice a day. Now that I work, and have bought a 4 bedroom house needing complete renovation, i'll be lucky to average 30mns a day. All i can say is that some of the stuff you learn when young you never completely forget, so practice hard.

I am probably averaging about 5 minutes a day. I don't like to take the fun out of it by forcing myself to practice for an arbitrary amount of time. If I get too good, I won't have an excuse for not being a rock star .

I don't practice. I just play.
I used to have more Orange stuff. Now I just have a PPC412 (black), and a Micro Crush.

Re: How Much Do You Practice?
I contradict myself so much with so many different activities, that I don't have a set regimen. I play a lot in bursts, and then have a lot of down time. I run marathons, kayak, backpack, snowboard, etc, etc, so sometimes my playing has to take a backseat. As the weather gets colder, I find that I play a lot more.
I wish I was just a full-time hippie stoner rocker though, and that I didn't like anything else but playing my guitar and mind expansion, but I'm just a jack of all and a master of none I guess.
When I do practice, I usually just go through my minor pentatonic scales, and add some blues licks to those.
If I had to put an average on it in a 7 day week, I'd say less than 30mins per day, as I miss a day or two usually. Now I'm figuring out why I suck.

I've tried different practice routines, learning scales, but I get bored really quickly. I even get bored playing other peoples songs nowadays...

Re: How Much Do You Practice?
i never took lessons, so i guess practicing always kinda clicked with me. when i first started out, i discovered something new and amazing every time i picked up the guitar, so i had a reason to practice a lot. since i joined a band though, i think i've learned more with less practice. in fact, just about everything i know about guitar is from being put into situations where i didn't quite understand the technique/style that was called for, and it was trial by fire.
so yeah, i'll bang it out with a met about an hour a day. but other than that, i don't feel like i'm actually practicing, or getting better...just maintaining.

Re: How Much Do You Practice?
I play as much as I can but between work and my 1 yr old it's difficult sometimes. Band practice once a week (used to be 3-4 day a week with 2 gigs a week) but she is worth it.

You run marathons!? I love running! I've done a couple marathons, and am doing the New York one in November! Awesome to find another runner here.ironlung40 wrote:I contradict myself so much with so many different activities, that I don't have a set regimen. I would love to have home rig! My little crush 15 or whatever it is doesn't cut it - it's hard to get inspiration on that amp. I'd love to get a Tiny Terror combo one of these days.Y0UNGBL00D wrote:literally once a week at the very least at rehearsal. i need a home rig.
