Re: Gibson's at it again . . .
It's probably just dirty tricks initiated by PRS. How the hell would the USFWS find out about the alleged importation of prohibited species after the fact besides an anonymous whistleblower? I don't think the 2009 raid has led to a successful prosecution thus far, so I have to wonder if they are just getting jerked around by the government because they are the most prominent manufacturer in the industry.

I don't understand...
1. How "endangered woods from Madagascar" got through customs.
2. How it is profitable to import woods from the other side of the planet.
3. Why our government even cares about the ecosystem of Madagascar.

A quote from that article:Ddjembe Mutombo wrote:Here is a better article on the subject. Apparently the government has employed lot of greedy musicians. haha.

"John Thomas, a law professor at Quinnipiac University and a blues and ragtime guitarist, says "there's a lot of anxiety, and it's well justified." Once upon a time, he would have taken one of his vintage guitars on his travels. Now, "I don't go out of the country with a wooden guitar."
That guy sounds like a real d!ck .

Well, having a guitar made from Noah's ark I'd be okay with! But something that is "the equivalent to Africa's blood diamonds" would suck! however, doesn't the thing with the blood diamonds have more to do with slavery, child soldiers, and terrorist rebels than an environmental disaster?
I'm going to just think about this as the feds being overzealous and bullying until proven otherwise! I love my '96 Gibson SG and feel safe that it's not made from elephant feet and monkey bones...

his point though is that maybe that's something for Madagascar to figure out, not the US Government. that's sorta overstepping their legal authority. unless they're referring to the town of Madagascar, New York.

Gibson just posted this on their facebook page:

Didn't know you can have your guitar taken away if you travel with it unknowingly having illegal woods. Seems a bit harsh to punish the consumer for something that should be something that's the manufacturers fault. I doubt it's a massive number that would be affected, but still, no one should have their guitar taken away for something like that.

While over at the Orange Amps Forum, Randy Bass observes:
"theatlanticwire.com is gay as sh!t."
It's funny how anonymous "guitar shredders" apparently lack sufficient intellectual credibility to comment on this subject on the internet according to the article's esteemed author. It's okay when Eddie Vedder whines about an environmental cause or stumps for some boner politician on the campaign trail though because his opinion is surely informed by decades of exhaustive research (and coincidentally consistent with that of said author).
In contrast, the WSJ article makes a great point about all of the hypocritical musicians who continue to use instruments crafted from these endangered woods instead of composites or reclaimed materials despite their purported advocacy for all things "green".
The best part is that "guitar shredders" will have to pay more for quality instruments as manufacturers have to devote more resources to regulatory compliance. Hooray for the Nanny State!

for the record, I am a musician (although not much of a guitarist), and I think this "green" movement is CRAP.

I'm a hippie that learned how to play guitar 11 years ago, I'm totally in favor of environmental crap, but not this "green" crap. I think the "green" thing is something corporations throw on a label to sell more products even though it actually solves nothing environmentally.Dark Helmet wrote:for the record, I am a musician (although not much of a guitarist), and I think this "green" movement is CRAP.
