Is his amp even mic'ed? It looks like his amp head is upside down too.
I heard Billy used a rack setup with marshall power amp, but that may be a more recent setup than the one in the video.
I had no idea he could sing that high.

I've seen them several times. They had Orange cabs in a cage like configuration behind them when he was playing those black Esquire copies.

Was that a Tokai?
It says that was shot in 1996 at the BBC, so I take it the Orange backline was supplied by the studio and mandatory (for TV). I suspect he had the head upside-down (and switched off) to show that the amps were not being used since he was endorsing Crate amps at the time IIRC. It still comes off as a bit disrespectful to Orange to have it upside-down though. Bastard...

Re: Never saw this before: ZZ Top & Orange
I doubt those amps are anything more than just empty shells put up by some stage hand as decoration. Billy's tone doesn't sound at all like and orange amp....more like Marshall which makes sense. Notice he's playing with his peso? He gets his tone that way by rolling off the treble and using a filed down peso as a pick.
Re: Never saw this before: ZZ Top & Orange
Thanks for posting - that great tone made my day.

Yeah, actually I think he goes direct anyway live through Marshall JMP-1's which would explain the upside-down heads....

Whats funny is that he has a piece of tape over the Gibson logo that says Tokai. Anybody else notice how much distortion the bassist is using? he's almost got some Lemmy tone going on Badass version of this song though, thanks for posting it!

No mics, no cables going into the the heads, no knobs, no light on the head. They were props to match the color of the drums.

Played one of these LP's at a shop walking distance from me days ago. So perfect. Like.. the Buddah's LP Juinor. Or the Pope maybe. But seriously, amazing.
