Let's hear it. Favorite maker and flavor.

I grew up in Texas so I am obviously a Blue Bell kid. Favorite flavor is mint chocolate chip. Mouthgasm every time.

Close second is Amy's (in Austin) Belgian Chocolate.

Funny, but I did a blind taste test with some of my students at school of 6 brands of vanilla ice cream. From supermarket chain Stop & Shop's house brand to Ben & Jerry's, Haagen Dazs, Breyer's, etc. etc. High end to low end. Kids chose the supermarket brand as number one and Haagen Dazs dead last....

i never really did care about the brands of ice cream. In my view I found that there all practically the same, especially with vanilla flavor (my favorite).
Although my favorite would be vanilla flavor with mars bar sauce (yes lots of melted mars bars) heck anything with mars bar sauce is amazing.

Caramel that I make myself. I get lots of requests for it. The secret is to brown the sugar so much but not too much.

Of commercial ice cream: Chocolate Shoppe (out of Wisconsin) makes a Lemon meringue that is kill for. Usually it is not available.

Billy, kids like what they are used to, their tastes may change as they get older.

cica,
the flavors are relatively the same when you compare brand to brand. Texture is the difference each brand provides. I have found Blue Bell to be richer than most other manufacturers though.

A friend of mine (who happened to be from Wisconsin) and I used to make and sell ice cream in college. We sold two flavors: Dark chocolate raspberry and white chocolate strawberry. Both were big hits at the places we worked.

Ddjembe Mutombo yeah i agree the textures are a bit different but to me when I'm eating things its all about how it tastes. Apparently the texture differences between high quality brands and low quality brands is that low quality brands , like walls in the uk (as in walls sausages) use pig fat in their ice cream. Don't know if that's true or urban myth.

Cheap supermarket own brand raspberry ripple everyday of the week!

If not available then prob neopolitan

Is that known worldwide? Strawberry, vanilla and choc, in one block.

I like plain stuff normally but vanilla sucks IMO. I know it's a people's fav just not me!

Blue Bunny is the bomb. my grandparents live about 20 minutes away from their Iowa headquarters, and they have a full-blown ice cream restaraunt. it's delicious.

Unfair to bring up gelato, especially since you live in Boston where you can actually get some decent gelato. My wife wants to start making it but we have not found any good recipes.

We had a gentleman in town open up a real Italian Gelato restaurant, it was good, but I found I prefer breyers over gelato.
He did make some killer caramel ice slush drink that was incredible. But it wasn't enough to save his business as he only lasted about a year and a half then closed down.

Graeter´s (I grew up near Cincinnati), and Blue Bell (after years in Texas) hands down for branded, buy in the store ice cream.

My grandma's "home made back yard summertime turn the crank sweat like hell I am so glad we made this" ice cream was damn good too!
