Just finished making a DIY head and 4x12 cab!

Post by Le Chat Noir » Sun Apr 24, 2011 12:16 pm

This has been an ongoing project over the past year or two, but I've finally finished it - an 18w clone head with a 4x12 cab :)

The chassis is an 18w Lite type, I bought it premade from a company called Valvetech. It was a prototype they were selling, wired up with NOS components etc.

The cab is an oversized 4x12 loaded with a quad of Celestion Heritage G12H I scored ages ago on Ebay cheap. I'm beginning to regret the 'oversized' part as it weighs a tonne, it's noticeably heavier than my old PPC412!! I had some help on the woodwork of this from a carpenter friend. Decided to finish it in a paint called tuff Cab instead of tolex as my first tolexing attempt went awry

Will take some pics today after my lunch! It's far from perfect but I'm quite proud of what I've done, considering I'm generally pretty rubbish with carpentry and it was my first try at stretching grille cloth, tolexing etc

EDIT: pics, apologies for the poor quality, it's dingey in the studio but with very bright sun coming through the window today! ;)

Sounds pretty cool, it's pretty much instant AC/DC if you crank it up and whack an SG into it! ;) Definitely has a classic Marshall-type vibe. It's a totally different sound to my AD30, I'm so used to that amp that this sounds quite bright in comparison!

Dude, that looks great! It has a really cool Steampunky vibe to it - that's a good thing, imo! Very good work and glad to hear it sounds great too.

I like the open back on the 4x12 cab. I don't know why more companies don't make them, but it's a nice way to show off the speakers. I would imagine that it makes that 18-watter sound pretty "full".

The semi-open back was actually partly an accident - initially I made two pieces, hoping I could switch it between being open or half backed... but when I played through it clsoed up the whole thing made an awful rattling noise! I cut a bit more off to grt it to how it is now and it seems fine, the rattle is gone and it seems to disperse nicely. Think the speakers need some breaking in as they have quite spiky highs, but generally sound very nice.
