Need advice on guitar- what would you do?
So my new Duesenberg is pre-2004 which means no serial number. I'm fairly OCD about serial numbers and having them written down. So what would you do? Engrave a serial number on it? Sign it? I've been toying with the idea of making a branding iron with my signature and branding my guitars...
But it freaks me out a bit that I would be unable to positively identify it if it were stolen....

Nice branding iron idea.
Maybe you could write it down and then put it in the case.
If you had a leather guitar strap you could brand that.

Is there a way you can attach a serial number plate to the guitar?
Such as the neck plate on the back? order one off of ebay and that way you still have the original
Or truss rod cover?
You will have to forgive my lack of knowledge on the layout of the Duesenberg guitars.
But I personally wouldn't engrave a serial number on the guitar that I couldn't get off. I agree with the importance of a serial number for identification but I couldn't bring myself to willfully scratch a guitar.

Branding is a good way to go but would defo put it out of sight, thieves wouldn't know it was there then either.

Is there a cavity you could mark inside with an initial or something?

This
Carve your birthdate without slashes so a "thief" would not know to remove it.

Those are the best ideas, I think. Finding an inner cavity somewhere to engrave this so it's "inconspicuous" would be a great idea.brianr0131 wrote:Jondog wrote:Is there a cavity you could mark inside with an initial or something?

I would go with previous suggestions to mark it in an inconspicuous manner. Or maybe have a new inlay installed on the fingerboard that says "Billy" .

Hi Billy,
In the UK it's fairly common practice to write identifying marks on a valuable item using a pen whose "ink" only shows up under UV light. The police are aware of this, of course, so are highly likely to see the security markings if they recover the item.
Hope that helps

yeah use that UV pen or just engrave something in the control cavity. that's what i've done with all of my guitars regardless of having a serial or not.

Yeah, it seems like doing your birthday in UV pen under the guard/control plate is probably the easiest option. Maybe a signature instead, or in addition.

I engraved some of my previous guitars with my post code (zip code) - but I am looking into micro chipping (my dog is microchipped too ).

does it have a tremelo bar and is it flat or fairly flat on the bottom side? if so have a jeweler engrave your name and birthdate on it.
