Thunderverb 200

Post by Kit » Sun Apr 17, 2011 1:43 pm

Who has this amp and what do you use it for, also what pedals do you use and are you happy with it in comparison to other amps you've played?

I'm most interested to hear how this amp sounds/handles heavy fuzz pedals and heavy down tuning, but any info would be good

i don't own one, and haven't played one, but yes it will handle drop tunings. at least until you get into Baritone Bass Guitar range, that is ;) not sure if it'll take fuzz pedals well, though. modern oranges traditionallly don't take well to dirt pedals. you'll have to ask one of the stoner guys around here. i'm sure they use 'em.

It's designed to register frequencies down to 30Hz so even at baritone and bass levels of low end it should work perfectly! There's a demo of Ade playing a baritone through one on Youtube, sounds pretty gnarly. I still have yet to hear one used for bass though, or even hear from anyone saying they've tried it...

That's just it! I've read lots of tech about it and a few videos on youtube, but i've not met anyone personally or online that owns it which I find very strange since it seems like such an awesome amp?!

They're too darn expensive to own. That is why no one seems to own one.

TV200 owners are hidding themselves from: the local tax collector, mesaboo-guys for ruining them their sound legend, even from OR120 and Plexi community for sounding more "vintage" Their social life is a mess :(

Ok, I know someone who wrote this review:

"I use this amp mostly to terrorize my band mates. Apart from that, mostly gigging’ at 100W, "Sonic" MC5 60's Rock, Jazz, Scary Blues, Some Character Metal (what the ...is that?)... and pure punk." It's also the best practice amp I’ve played. Every other amp flatters my playing abilities. Not this one. I will hear every single wrong note I play with gain +volume up . Every "out of the blue" pick dynamic is not hidden any more.
Tone stuff: Best tone ...bla bla subjective I’m a happy owner bla bla... the sound is really thick. It has its own unique sound. If you want to hear where it can get you, better hear the plexi demos on tube. Super sounds of the 70s and a bit of 2020s. TheMesa’s RoyalAtlantic is trying to come close (Mesas took their lesson from OR and trying to… ketchup  ) .
AByss stacks: ABing to triple rect and even triaxis w 9090 made them sound tiny and fizzy. ABed to SuperReverb it sounded dark and had more bark... ABed to JCMs it sounded on ... it's own. Someone could say TV intentionally points out the frequencies JCM doesn't. They don't fall on each other’s way and they pair quite good. AB to OR120, tv sounded... less modern more plexi-ish. I used to get scared by the amount of the bass frequencies it kept pumping out at all volume levels – I even used an EQ sometimes on loop to cut the 50HZ. Having said that tuning B is butter to it's bread. Metal B use a pedal you are there (my kids love this stuff :0 ).
The gain structure is very sophisticated and it takes a lot of time to learn how to handle and learn it's sonic possibilities. I could describe it like some kind of “fullfreq” gain. The more experience one has with vintage amps the better he can learn to handle it. Using an EQ and or a good fuzz (like fulltone 70) can get you to heaven. It eats every pedal I have tried well. However if you use too many pedals you don’t need this amp. Get a Marshall or a Fender. The fx loop is amazing bla bla... It’s a different beast than TV50. The 200w sound is totally different. It distorts less and it’s less “metallic” and “more rich” (not only watt-wise). The 100w setting gets close to TV50. If U use a low gain single coil you’re gonna need some kind of boost since it’s input is primarily designed for high gain pups.“

Oh, did i mention that when I asked him: "can it do medal?" he replied: "Can you? By the way, is Sonic Rendezvous Band metal?”

I have to point out that you cannot trust anyone but your own ears. The guy who told me that stuff above is probably another urban legend victim.

I can honestly say that very few other amps are capable of handling down-tunings like the TH200.

Good example: Josh from Every Time I Die uses one for bass. He's got the gnarliest crunch sound of any bassist I know.

Another good example: Jerry Cantrell used a TH200 to blend guitar tones on the latest Alice in Chains record. That's gotta stand for something!

I doubt it! Most people aren't practical, Andy, including myself. I don't need 100 watters, but I have em' anyway.

I know of one guy using a TV200 in a metalcore band (drop B it think). He reckons it's pretty much impossible to use @200W. Apparently he always has it knocked down to 100.

To be honest, I never really get the opportunity to use my TV50 flat out.

Will from Zoroaster gets some sick tones from his. There's plenty of vids on youtube.

I really want one and think i'm gonna pull the trigger and get one myself. Sometimes when playing live I found the RV50 and TV50 could do with a little more thump in the low end, maybe a touch tighter. I tune down to D and maybe half a step further but not down to B or anything.
I've come to the conclusion that i prefer the TV to the RV, I also dont need clean tones but i do need a second crunch channel. I'm not gonna run 2 cabs with it or at 200watts, just an orange 4x12.

I've just talked myself into right there.

*sigh* selling gear is usually a painful drawn out process for me.....

It would be a cool bass amp. Too many watts for me for guitar, but metal guys would probably be into it.
