Strings/Tuners

Post by EMG2385 » Fri Apr 15, 2011 5:13 am

My strings are getting old and buzzy and my tuner recently crapped out on me.. what is everyone's favorite strings and tuners? I have a telecaster and a mustang 65 reissue.

i love d'addarios 11s or 12s personally. but it really depends on your preferences. what style of music you play, the feel you like, how low you tune all have to do with that.

as for a tuner, i would look at the TC Electronic Polytune. it's a cool little pedal, and it's actually more accurate than most other pedal tuners out there (i think it's something like 6 times more accurate than the boss TU-3). if not, look at a Korg Pitchblack. i love mine, and it's also super accurate.

I use Dunlop Medium Heavy (11-50) on my strat, I like the thicker low end.

for the tuner, i agree the TC Polytune looks pretty cool i'd have gotten one if i hadnt just got my Pitchblack which again is brilliant.

More love here for D'Addario - used XL's on my Ric 620 for years now. Also started using them on my Bass - like a new instrument... need to get a proper tuner since my old Boss went walkabout  - currently using my micro-crush :)

Again D'ddarios. I use them on practically all my guitars and basses. Reason? Great sound and utter consistency. I've had very occasional duff strings from other makes, never yet from them.

Tuners? Basically anything out there these days (including the Boss stuff) is accurate enough for gigging duties. Try a couple and see how easy you find them to use. That is the really important thing.

Personally if I didn't already own a Peterson I'd have gone for the TC, but you don't need to pay anything like that much for a basic tuner. For years I just used a cheap no name thing which also did fine.

Elixir Poly or Nano Webs, .10-.46.

And I love my Ibanez pedal tuner, great price and has been working great (had it since September 2010)!

I just started using the Elixir's not too long ago, but I've noticed the coating will sort of frey off from picking over time which is annoying. Otherwise I use D'addario 10's on my strat or 11's on my Epiphone (shorter scale than the strat). I have about 6 tuners....they all work great.

Turbo tuner. Not cheap, but the last tuner you will buy.

Yeah, I notice the bit of fraying where I strum, but I have to look very closely - it's not too bad. I just love the way they feel when I play them, and they last a while!

I've been using custom gauge EBs, 13-56 w/ a wound 3rd string. Tuner-wise I have a TU2, but I'm really GASing for a Polytune.

Ernie Ball Power Slinkies. 11-48.

I use a Planet Waves Chromatic Pedal Tuner for gigs. Just for playing around, I use a Planet Waves Headstock tuner. Both are great!
Please, call me Austin.

I've got a package of D'addario EXP's I'm waiting to try. They're a coated, hex core, nickel-plated steel string. They claim they sound identical to the XL's and that they have perfected the art of of coated strings and that they feel like uncoated strings.

Just ran out of EB Slinky's. Moving on to D'Addario's, and have some GHS nickel coated strings after that. These are .10 - .46 with the exception of the D'Add's. They were .09 - .46. These strings are great on my LP's. EB's are for my Fenders. My tuner is a Fender PT-100. Great tuner and I love the bright blue LED for when I'm in tune. You can see it plain as day! 8)
