digitech bad monkey vs ibanez ts-7

Post by KAMI » Sat Apr 02, 2011 9:16 pm

anyone have any opinions on these

which one is better?

I play metal/metalcore so will be using it a boost to tighten everything

or can anyone suggest something better in the same price range (up to about £60)

bad monkey without a doubt. those cheapy ibanezes are really bad. i think the bad monkey is about as good as a TS9. the 808 would really be the best though for a tubescreamer type sound.

Maxon AD808. They are the "original" tubescreamer. OD9 is good too.

Buy used and stretch your budget a tad. IMO getting top quality gear is worth the extra money if you can make it happen. It will save you in the long run from buying/selling lots of mediocre things that don't compare well.

Also, I would go bad monkey as well if I was just looking at these two pedals.

The Guitar Fetish pedals are supposed to be good. They have a Tubescreamer clone. It uses the correct chip and should be made really well.

the ts-7s are fine - and you can buy them modded to original tubescreamer specs on ebay for next to nothing - i personally think tubescreamers are a tad overrated

although - many of the 7 series ibanez pedals are underrated - like the echo/delay and the chorus/flange

the sd-1 is pretty good pedal

so is the bad monkey

i reckon you'll be fine either way

get the BBE Green Screamer, it's based on the 808 circuit and it has true bypass.
normally sells for $100 new but I've seen it go on sale for $50-60 at GC pretty regularly not to mention used sales.

In that price range? Go the Bad Monkey. Great value for money.

The best OD I've used = Suhr Shiba, but each to their own.

the SD1 is fine, but it won't do nearly the same thing the tubescreamer does. tubescreamers "tighten" up your sound by adding mids, and losing a little bass. wheras the SD1 does the opposite; it adds bass and sucks mids a little bit. just so you know before you buy

I heard the bad monkey can get a little muddy also

basically most overdrive pedals out there, including the bad monkey are tubescreamer clones. most distortion pedals, however are not. the SD1 is a distortion pedal. the bad monkey will only be as muddy as any other tubescreamer.
