Ideas for solid state practice amp

Post by ECWeagles » Mon Mar 14, 2011 8:36 pm

Hey chaps.

I am looking for a solid state practice amp for bedroom use.

All my live stuff at present is using in house amps and as we are hoping to move house soon, needing to free up cash flow by selling some gear.

Any recommendations?

Cheers
Jeremy

Tech 21 Trademark 10. Has a SansAmp modeler built in, spring reverb, headphone jack, and XLR direct out.

Bad news, they stopped making them a while ago and no one is selling theirs, including me.

+1 000 000

They are absolutely great sounding amps, you may have to search the bay to find one, but absolutely recommend them.

Roland cube 15 or Fender Mustang 1. Like 'em both and really affordable. Modeling, but no lag that becomes really frustrating. I bet your local dealer carries them both.

I'd check out Vox for solid-state stuff. The Pathfinder is very impressive for being transistorized. The Valvetronix stuff is decent enough if you want effects and modeling. The new Mini 3 seems pretty nice and can run on batteries or the included AC adapter. It even comes in Green or Ivory tolex.

Unfortunately, I'd only recommend the Orange Crush series if you don't really want the Orange dirt sound and are mainly looking for good clean/slightly hairy tones.

I have only tried the Valvetronix 15 and returned it two days later for a valve jr and a nice dirt pedal.

My rocker 30 is gathering dust since i purchased a pod hd and a nearfield monitor.
The rocker 30's sound is superb but for low volume's the pod shines.

I use a Vox Ac15. haha.

I had Fender solid state amp years ago that sounded pretty good IMO. Stage 112SE. It got very loud also and was usable with a band, but still did good at home.

+1

I have played both the Super Champ XD and Vibro Champ XD and was surprised at how good the distorted tones were. I suppose it all depends how much money you want to spend.

Really? No one is going to mention that Orange has Crush PiX solid state amps?

The CR35LDX is an awesome amp that sounds spectacular.

You guys are letting me down :-) haha

I don't wanna be accused of being a shill or something :D .

I haven't tried the Crush Pix amps yet. I do own a Crush 30R and I don't love it. It really has very good cleanish tones, but I don't use cleanish tones that often. I just can't get the right distorted tone out of it, but then again, it ain't got no tubes in it  .

A curveball, but if you can find one I highly recommend an Electro Harmonix Dirt Road! Lots of character, can be grabbed for quite cheap on occasion as people don't really know about them.

I did a little video about the one I used to own, I've since sold it but sometimes regret it...
