Cab build....Need advice/Help
I went cheap and bought Tolex that wasn't long enough to fully wrap the cabinet. So, as a result I have a seam on each side of the cab. It's about a third of the way up from the bottom. It's pretty noticeable obviously. I want to hide it with something. I'm thinking like a 2" wide black band of some sort. Something that I'll be able to glue solidly to the tolex and also something that isn't very thick so I can still wrap around front to tuck in before installing baffle.
FYI the tolex itself is green/black and the corners and handle will be black so that's the main reason I am thinking a black band.
Any thoughts?
Thanks for the help.

if it's a small seam you can peel back the tolex and some piping in. Beyond that, I think covering it with a layer of vinyl might be your best option.

Re: Cab build....Need advice/Help
I thought about piping but it won't work for me. I guess a strip of plain black vinyl will have to do. I guess I can use the same glue to get it to adhere. I was looking for something that might possibly have a design on the edges or something like that so it's not an obvious cover up. But, ahhh who cares.
Lesson learned.....don't be cheap with the tolex.

It's not too late to order more tolex. Have you glued anything yet?

nothing's going to look pretty unless you order more tolex, but have you cut in handles yet? that should afford you a little more tolex. might that be enough to make patches?

There aren't a lot of great options that don't involve ripping the tolex off and starting over. If you use something to cover the seam, it basically has to be tolex or something equally as durable. Black will be subtle, but will look somewhat like an afterthought. You would have to go with something tacky like white or gold to make it look more like an intentional design element.
I would consider repeating the same strips on the upper half of the cab so that you have some quadrilateral symmetry going on.

Good advice. It's only a small 1x12 though so I may not repeat the strips. If I could find some 2" wide tolex like product with bound edges it would be perfect.Randy Bass wrote:There aren't a lot of great options that don't involve ripping the tolex off and starting over. How about cutting up a guitar strap or something?

I bought a couple of these @ Home Depot:
They are vinyl and very flexible. I will use a straightedge and get the cleanest cut possible. Then, I'll face the clean "factory" edge up and my cut down to make it look cleaner from most angles. I think this should actually work pretty well. We shall see.

Actually.....all things considered I think it came out half decent. I still have some glue to clean up and a couple finishing touches.

Half-decent it is ! As long as it sounds good and doesn't fall apart when you pick it up, it was worth it.

Your cab has a belt on! You should put some studs on it.

It kinda looks like something you ripped off of the wall at a bowling alley .

Pretty good to me! Unfortunate that it wasn't exactly halfway up though.
Love the green scheme though. Pretty fresh cab!
