Tuners use an even tempering so everything is the same amount of out of tune so you can play in any key and sound okay. If you go perfect fifths eventually will go astray.

The G string would be out of tune depending on which key I was playing in, which is not unexpected.

Has anybody seen the guitars with the staggered frets that make every note a perfect pitch. I saw a picture of Stevie Vai with one. Pretty extreme.

I do the same thing a lot when I find the G not sounding quite right after using my tuner. I've found tuning the G with the octave on the A string about halfway down the neck the best way to do this. But, my Gibson Jr I've been playing lately actually doesn't have this G string issue that most other guitars usually seem to have. I must have lucked out.

Yamaha made a Frank Gambale signature model with the Fretwaves tuning system:

something like that would just annoy me. i'm kind of a sloppy player, so i would be missing notes all over the place.

Except the people you are playing to have ears as well. I know I have never wanted to pay to listen to somebody tune.

One that is cheap, durable and keeps me in tune.

I happen to have a Korg at the moment.

i hope your bassist, other guitarist, keyboardist, and other vocalist have a mutant copy of your ear, or you'll all be playing 'somewhere' around 440 :D

Does your Junior have a Lightning Bar/Compensated Wraparound Bridge? I've seen some (vintage ones) that are compensated for a wound third string and some that are compensated for a plain third. That could explain it one way or the other.

i always kinda wanted one of those. i got my Korg maybe a month before the PolyTune came out. the only gripe i could see with one of those is having to press a button every time i switched from standard to drop tuning.

I've been researching these lately and have been trying to decide between the Korg Pitchblack, TC Polytune, and Turbo Tuner. I think there's a Korg Pitchblack+ also.

I might end up going with the Turbo Tuner, but I want to see what's up with the Pitchblack+.
