Bands U never gave shot, then epiphany moment U like em?

Post by ironlung40 » Thu Jan 27, 2011 3:55 pm

Hey guys,

I know this has all happened to us. Maybe a band has been around for awhile, maybe even a long while, and you never gave em' a listen, or fair chance at liking them, then you heard a song, or a particular performance, and then BAM! you suddenly realized that you had been missing out on some cool tunes. Let's see some examples of this, who knows, you may turn someone else onto some inspiring music.

I'll start......

Most recently Kings of Leon per this youtube video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxktTMaRnpA" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I usually just thought of them as another radio crap band, but this tune changed my mind about them. Yeah, some could argue that they still belong in the "bands that jumped the shark" category. But, still this song changed my perspective of them a lot.

Here is another

The Screaming Trees...never tried them out either, but this video made me explore them, and I'm liking this and other tunes by them as well
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jamJIe332R0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
This example blows my mind, because I was big into the 90's alt rock genre. I even saw Screaming Trees at Lollapalooza 96', but was busy galavanting around waiting for other bands to start, and never really watched much of their performance.

maybe it is a maturation process or sometimes just never getting exposed to the music at the right time of day (moodiness) but, I'm kinda fascinated by experiencing older stuff, like it is fresh.
Sincerely,

Sure, it happened to me a few times. Usually because I couldn't hear past the lead vocalist for a long time, then made the jump and realised I'd kind of been enjoying it all along. Now they are some of my favourite bands, and often (but not always) favourite vocalists too for that matter.

The Who, Led Zep, the Strolling Bones, the Smashing Pumpkins... :wink:

Happened to me recently with Sonic Youth. I never really listened to them much but now I can't get enough of them. Their so original. The song "Incinerate" was my musical epiphany. One of the best songs I've ever heard.

I'm with ya. If you took Plant's vocals away from Led Zeppelin, and only had instrumentals of all of their songs, They'd be in my top 10 bands of all time, but Plant's vocals wear on me very quickly. With the Pumpkins, I liked them very much from day 1, but about the time they released Adore, I was over Billy Corgan's vocals and his rock god attitude that he has/had. I also only really liked their hard stuff like Zero, etc. The cherub, harp strumming sissy stuff always got skipped over, even though it was unique.

I love the Who, but I would like to have some of their music remastered and re-released. the mix just sounds to trebly and thin to me. I love their songs though. the rocked the superbowl last year I believe it was or the year before last, I think last year was the Boss. They've still got it regardless.

I've never heard of them. I'll check em out. I've had many bands that I turned onto by seeing them live. If a band is great as a live act, it can really set them apart. I found Graveyard this way. I went to see Clutch, and Graveyard opened for them. They are now one of my very highest favorites. you can check some of their stuff out at http://www.myspace.com/graveyardsongs" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hank Williams - back when i was a teen -

then one day i 'got him'

and then i named my dog after him

also dylan - i always found him painfully annoying... and then i learned to block out his voice and concentrate on the stories and the music - and now i actually don't mind his stuff...

Thursday.

Everyone talked about Thursday being all the rage back in the day and I never really listened to them. Then my buddy played me the "War All the Time" album without telling me it was Thursday and I was hooked. I don't like their new stuff, but those first two albums (Full Collapse and War All the Time) were pretty sweet.

Haha, I had that happen with Kings of Leon too. I did not like them and wouldn't give them a chance. Then in the middle of a long drive someone played this song:

I freakin loved that song. I was VERY surprised when they told me it was KOL.
