or there should be a law that requires camera companies to install high quality ribbon mics on them ;)

In general, maybe yeah.. But I think some sounds OK for being the camera mic. At least my vids sound somewhat true to how the amp or whatever sounds in real life which is important.

I think it depends on the camera. I have a Sony video camera with a Zeiss lens that has a decent microphone. I have recorded concerts with it where the audio is about what you might get with a Zoom. It behaves like it has a compressor/limiter built into it. But that is a decent digital video camera. Some of Teddy's first videos sounded pretty good with the same set up. These are probably the exception.

Ok fine, you need a permit to ensure a suitable mic is being used.

I agree with the premise, for the most part camera audio recordings are pretty bad.

for the most part they are not very good, but they do serve their purpose which is to give you a rendition of what you are hearing, as you are standing there recording. It is basically meant to be a visual and audio reminder of the event you intend to record. If you are doing a serious sound test, then why you would even bother is beyond me, as if you are at the level where you can be doing serious stuff, you would think you would want proper recording mediums to deliver the true sound of what you are producing. There are exceptions to the rules, and some record better than others, but I believe alot of the stuff recorded on youtube is done with digital cameras by kids in the bedrooms, as alot of people can't afford or don't want to invest money into getting a great recording audio and visual device.

I've gotten some cool sounds out of camera mics that do an OK job, but it's true, they should be mic'd. I need to just bite the bullet and get a small portible recording rig together so I can toss a mic in front of a mic whenever I need it.

The nearly 56,000 views on my crappy demo might disagree...
