Orange Slave 120 Graphic, price..?

Post by HenningSB » Wed Jan 19, 2011 10:22 am

Hey,

A guy I know is offering me a Orange Slave 120 Graphic- how much is it worth?
I do not have photos of it, but he's telling me its from about 71 or 72. Says its the ultimate stoner/doom amp.. but can you use this just with a cab? I know you're supposed to match it with a head, then cabs.. I only have a Rockerverb 50 MK1, no slave output. But can I run the Slave amp through the FX loop?

Thanks for any input,

- H

UPDATE:

Oh, its serial number is 38! (and the original tolex has been torn of years ago, replaced with green..sweet)

no idea how much it's worth, but you need a preamp with power amp outs or an older orange with a slave out for it to be really useful. i say jump on it regardless.

I tried using my OR120's power section with RV50 preamp connected via loop. didn't work.

First of all, it helps us to know where you live as prices can vary by country, etc. Put it in your profile- it really helps.

That said, a slave is a real specialty item- most people don't know what it is, let alone would be able to use it. As far as value, I hate to put it this way, but it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. If it was on ebay, I wouldn't hazard any kind of guess about what one would sell for- I would expect more than $1K but then it's if someone wants it.

The way you use it and the way it was designed was to tap off of the Slave Out on an Orange head. It was designed to supplement the power of a vintage Orange amp- this way you could run 2 4X12's with your head- run the slave out to the slave head- and run another 2 4X12's with the same sound as the head. You can't run directly into this thing as it's a power amp only- no preamp.

So are you saying that you'd run 2 4x12's with your head and 2 4x12's with the slave? Because... THAT'S FREAKIN' ROCK AND ROLL RIGHT THERE!! Seriously though, 4 4x12's?

Cool info though, i've only seen pictures of these and never knew what they were for. It definitely has a very specialized useage and I doubt there are many people who could really use it.

Im in Norway if you wonder. But pricewise? how much? He is asking about 1400-1600$. Retolexed, but everything else is in mint condition. Rarely used, missing a tube, thats why..hah. But should I go for it? Would have been better for me if I had a OR120 or something with Slave Out on.. Using only the Slave into a cab isnt very good is it?

bclaire already said, you can't use it with a cab as it is...you need another orange head. this is only for extending to two more cabs. if you ask me it isn't very useful nowadays.

Yeah, I understand. The guy who's offering it to me said he only uses the slave amp into a cab, with a booster infront.. But it wouldn't sound that great. And why would I need 4 4x12s? Maybe 2 4x12s sometimes, but my amp alone can power that..

But is it worth it? maybe trying to lower his price then selling it later for a higher price? it is rare isnt it?

I think if you want an old Orange head you should wait for one with a preamp to come up. That amount for a Slave which has been re-tolexed in green and doesn't even have a full working valve compliment seems crazy to me. Doesn't really matter how rare or otherwise it is. It is indeed a very specialised item and you'll never get the full Orange sound from it. It is only an old (green) Orange power amp, nothing more...

Slave heads like that are nearly useless unless you're playing stadiums without a PA.

Using it with a booster pedal won't give you the sound of an old Orange, it will just amplify the sound of the booster pedal. You can do that for much cheaper if that's how you'd be using it.

Personally, I wouldn't even entertain the option of buying it.

As everyone else has said here, the slaves are useless unless:

a)you live in 1976 and don't have a PA and are playing huge shows
b)you run a modeller through it - something like the Fractal would actually work really well.
c)you are trying to put together a vintage all tube PA, at which point you are crazy.

Super mint condition ones of these just about hit £300 GBP.

The only reason I would buy it would be to pack it, store away in the garage and pass on to my kids when i bite the dust. Hopefully by then it would be worth more than I paid for it but seeing as my kids are inline to have my old '64 piggy back, I think that's enough
