I have a thousand bucks. Buy me an amp!

Post by niangelo » Tue Jan 11, 2011 4:50 am

Alright, here's my rules:

1. Combo. 1x12 or 2x12, preferably.
2. Tube (what else?)
3. Doesn't need to shred. Needs to rock. Clean that plays nice with pedals acceptable.
4. I'm familiar with Orange, let's stick to non-citrus brands.
5. Not needed, but works with a Les Paul a plus.

JCM800 50w 2X12 4104 combo

that amp is the reason why my r30 is going on ebay...

there are two downsides to this amp though

1. it weighs about as much as a twin

2. it will make many of your dirt pedals redundant, unless you use the low gain input - which is an excellent pedal platform...

If i was in the market for a 2x12 combo that wasn't an Orange, there is a seriously strong chance I would go with this.

I would also consider an ac30, and some others.

Marshall vintage modern combo. 50watts with 2 different voicing, vintage and modern with 2 celestion greebacks. really thick tone. I played one a few times in the music store and there great with so much choice of sound. They sell pretty cheap also

the VM is a good one. myself, i would go for a used AC30 with cheaper speakers, and use the money i save to throw Celestion Blues in there.

just noticed vox came out with some new ac30's, hand wired/turret board, but still relatively cheap as their made in china i think. over $1k tho

maybe try a traynor ycv50, they are under $1k new and a lot less used. jcm800'ish dirt channel + boost and a decent clean channel

I second the Marshall JCM800 4104...also look at the Marshall 1974X combo, with 18 watts....killer amp.

AC30. Plug in your humbuckers and turn up the volume. Rockness. And put at least one real blue in it.

I will have to say I've been very impressed with my Genz-Benz Black Pearl 30. I believe it will do a very voxy clean and has some great drive, which some lean towards a Matchless sound on the drive. Comes with an eminence Redfang AlNico, reverb and a built in boost with pedal. The "voice" options give you quite a bit of variability in your sound too.

Used 1x12 combo should run you $600-$800 and it's worth picking up an attenuator for it as well. Shop long enough and you're well under $1k. The downside is that it's a players amp. I doubt it will hold much of a resale value down the road like a Vox or Marshall but hey, I play guitar for fun not for the future value of the equipment.

Silverface non-master volume Fender Super Reverb or Pro Reverb. Maybe a drip edge or blackface if you get really lucky and get one for under $1k.
