Orange Tiny Terror Combo 10 vs Tiny Terror Combo 12

Post by Lobato » Mon Jan 03, 2011 5:15 pm

Hello:
I am new to the forum. I just ordered online the TT combo with the 10inch speaker. Is there a difference in sound. Did I make a mistake buying that instead of the 12.
Help appreciated

what do you intend using the TT combo for?

when i bought mine i played thru the 10 and 12inch combos and decided the 12 inch celestion was worth the extra money BUT i use my TT for gigging and felt hte tone was better suited to my needs.

Mainly will use it at home but I am scared in the loss of tone quality if I decide on the 10 speaker.

you won't lose tone quality. it's not a matter of better or worse. it's a matter of preferece. 10" speakers and 12" speakers have a different sound. one that's not necessarily worse or better-just different. that being said, i don't think there's really any benefit to getting the 10" combo over the 12" combo--the size is the same, the weight is similar, and the tone is probably very similar. it doesn't matter either way really.

The G12H-30 in the 12" version is really well-suited to the Tiny Terror. I have not tried the 10" version, but I think you would lose some bass response for sure. That may not be a problem for you, depending on what you like.

Get the 12'' you will not regret it, I own the 12'' and love it, i can play quietly at home and even rehearse with a loud drummer. I havent tried the 10'' but i assume the 12 will be a fuller more rounded sound.

For home use the 10 inch will be 100 % fine with no problems. The difference in price between the 10 inch an 12 inch was the equivalent of about 200 $ (which is a nice chunk of change) in the country i live in. For my needs it was worth it as i gig with it and like the fuller sound at high volumes.

But seriously for home/practice usage maybe a smaller valve amp would be a better buy ,,, Vox AC 4 or blackstar range.

just my 2 cents

I bought a 10 at Christmas for my son and to be honest i think i should have got the 12
We also have a line 6 spider 75 with a 12" Celestion speaker and I find it has a better sound than the TT at home volumes, not so much on the clean side of things but I was quite dissapointed with high gain sound, so much so I bought a blackstar HT Distx pedal to go in front of it but no ammount of knob twiddling can get rid of the slightly dull sound :(
This may be sacrilege to say this on an Orange forum but it is my opinion, and I am listening to the amps side by side NOT on you tube.
I think the difference in tone is probably due to the speaker size, so if i had my choice again it would be the 12 for me.

Err yea I have to backtrack a little here...I was using it on 7watts at around 1/4 volume but last week my neighbour went out as i was coming home and as the house was empty of wife and kids i thought i would have a play..

At 15watts 1/2 vol just over half gain and tone it sounds immense!!! At full vol 3/4 gain ii nearly wet myself, I must admit it was a life changing experience for me :D :D
Gone was the dullness and the anxiety over getting the 10" I sounded like Jim Root and was a guitar GOD
Well maybe not the latter part but deffinitely a valve convert

I <3 my ORANGE TT.... Do they drive 4x12 cabs well?

And is the amp section just the same as a TT head without the handle...will it seperate to make just a head??

This question is for a guy at work i dont plan on pulling it apart......not yet anyways :) :)

Cheers Martin.

Yes a TT drives a 4x12 very nicely

As far as the amp section goes, yes they are basically the same without the handle.

If you were going to seperate it to make a head, you would be further ahead just buying a head and then getting a speaker cab, as the speaker cab/combo without the head in it, first off wouldn't look that appealing, and you wouldn't have much resale value. With the head you can plug it into any 16ohm speaker cab you want, giving you a wider variety of speakers to choose from.

The Tiny Terror combo chassis is in fact different from the head. The front panel is one piece and the cage is much different as a result. The biggest difference is the big old mounting flange on the front that would prevent it from sitting level on a flat surface. You would have to build a head sleeve to properly convert the combo to a head as a result.
