Let's talk compressors... again, because it's fun!

Post by Bandeapart » Sat Dec 25, 2010 7:22 pm

So I need a compressor. There's no doubt about it. I have a Rickenbacker, if I want serious jangle, I need one. I borrowed my band mate's Janglebox for months, though it was pretty good, it just wasn't for me - it was a bit one dimensional IMO. I've also played a few minutes on his Diamond compressor, and that sounded great.

So I want opinions on the following pedals:

Barber Tone Press
Diamond Compressor
Keeley 2 Knob
Keeley 4 Knob (even though I think 4 knobs is too damn many for me, I like simple)

So throw in your opinions, you can see my equipment below and I play music similar to the modern British thing going on - Arctic Monkeys, The Rifles, etc.

I have a Keeley 2 knob... thing is the other two controls on the 4 knob are still there on the 2 knob. They're just internal trimpots. As far as the pedal goes, it's very good. It's quiet for a compressor, and pretty versatile. I use it mainly on my cleans, just to smooth things out. But it also works pretty well as a boost, and it does the country style twang thing too. It responds to my guitars quite differently. It sounds good with my Tele but for some reason it really shines with my Strat. I've gotten to the point when I'm playing clean it's never off. It's hard to describe what it adds to the tone, IMHO. Transparent, but it adds some sparkle. I've heard great things about the Barber and Diamond comps, too, but haven't had either one personally.

I've always wanted to try the analogman mini bi-comp and the diamond comp, but haven't yet. Heard great things about the Keeley comps as well.

I have a marshall compressor, and don't recommend one at al :!: When I engaged the dirt channel on my amp, it added his to the sound. It was nice for cleans, but I found (with mine that is, have not tried any on the list) that it didn't add sparkle, it just evened everything out, and gave it an overall volume boost. At times it seemed as if there was a blanket effect going on, now I could have had the settings wrong, but I played with it for 9 months with no positive result (ya gave it the old college try)

save your money on the Keeleys. check out a VS Comp 66. my absolute favorite pedal on my board. it does a low-mid compression very well. the keeleys sound best when they're pretty compressed, in my opinion. might i add that the VS is completely quiet, and very smooth. and about $100 cheaper than either Keeley.

but of those you listed, i would go after the Diamond. i've heard great stuff about those.

Diamonds what I settled on. Its the least "squishy" sounding, but adds that extra sustain and attack that I was looking for. Sounds fantastic on and off. The EQ helps too.

i swore by the keeley 4 knob when i was gigging with the r30 - but when i switched to a jcm800 the compressor went on ebay -

killing the natural dynamics that you get from a jcm is blasphemy... imho

Worth having a look at the Aphex Punch Factory too, and one of my old housemates liked the Tone Press.
