Recently bought a Barber Electrics Half Gainer to add some clean boost and drive into my sound, which is generally fairly clean.
Great pedal! Noticing though it sounds at its best in front of the amp rather than in the fx loop. I also have a few other pedals and it sounds a little clearer/louder on its own through the front, and also the same if not in a chain (i.e on its own).
Is this because of the cabling required for the fx loop (eg approx 12m quality cable)? Also why would 3 other 'true bypass' pedals in the chain, turned off, lessen the overall volume? Its not necessarily a problem as there's loads more on offer from the barber, but curious as to why the fx loop lowers the overall vol and also why the extra pedals turned off do the same?
Any thoughts?

Is your head an MKI? You can do a search here and especially in the tech forum, there is tons of info on it. I don't really know the exact reason myself, since I don't use the loop, but it has something to do with impedance and if you use a buffered pedal it should cure the problem.
