I dont see what the difference is between having a 3rd mid-gain channel and using a boost pedal. Either way you step on a footswitch and the preamp gets a little more saturated.

It's just one more thing in the amp to suck tone and break in the middle of a show.

Wish they would make an AD5 head. I would buy one immediately
