OT: Who do you think is the best guitarist right now
Personally i think Davy Knowles is, what this kid has done at such a young age and the great music he has put out is truly amazing. He has a LOT of talent and surely will go very far. I cant wait to hear his new stuff. it should be spectacular just like the rest of his stuff!
Just wanted to hear what you guys have to say
It seems in a day and age where pop music rules the air waves true guitarists are hard to come by, and hopefully one or a group of them will restore us back to real quality music, IMO

I'd say Johnny A. at this point has the most to say and offer....

... although I saw Daniel Lanois last week and he is the first guitarist in a long time to actually impress me.

guys and dolls, there is no such thing as a "best".
the worst, however, is a full bucket.

Me. I am. Come on.
I'm not sure. I'm not very into the latest guitarists. Of the guys I know, I'd say Adam Bills of Fatigi and Sean Graham of Ghost in a Jar, I really dig their playing, some of the best I know.

Joe Bonamassi is young and seems to have the full package: great tone, good phrasing, melodic playing. In second is Neil Oler of Ghost in a Jar, then Teddy of Le Chat Noir.

I think there's a lot of good guitarists out there. You just have to look harder to find them. The pop guys are actually usually very good (that's how they get those gigs). Problem is, they aren't playing guitar dominated music so you can't really hear what they have to offer IMO.
I dig Derek Trucks. Johnny A is obviously a bad-@ss. John Mayer can play when he wants to. Jonny Lang is pretty mean too. Warren Haynes. Trey Anastasio (although I caouldn't tell you any of his or Phish's songs - I saw him on a late night TV show one time and he just floored me). Robin Trower is playing better than ever now. Billy Gibbons. Too much Eric Johnson in Bonamassa for me...
I vote for Neil and Teddy and although I haven't heard Billy and Frank play I am certain those guys are good. I mean look at 'em, they look like freakin' rock stars to me!

"Best" is sooo subjective...
Davy can definitely rip and is a good singer too in my opinion.
just for some variety (ignore the singers =) we can't dismiss the more experimental guitarists out there right now:
Dave Knudson-Minus The Bear

Tim Collis-This Town Needs Guns
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DFLjLzgTGI
and even Jack White (White Stripes, etc) can conjure some amazing sounds too

Re: OT: Who do you think is the best guitarist right now
josh homme, Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Matthew Bellamy are my favourites at the moment.
Re: OT: Who do you think is the best guitarist right now
same here with the Josh and Omar, love Bellamy's earlier stuff too.
Re: OT: Who do you think is the best guitarist right now
Well does "best" mean technically or "best" songwriter/guitarist?
Slash fits both bills for example. Derek Trucks is awesome, but what great songs did he write? Joe Bonamassa is also awesome but what was that great song again? Guthrie Govan is probably technically the best guitarist who ever lived but he can't write one song that moves people.
I get the feeling that by "right now" you mean young guitarists who are just starting out. Don't forget that Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, David Gilmour, Jimmy Page, Joe Satriani, Slash, Angus Young, Eddie Van Halen, and a hundred others are still alive and playing shows. I don't think the likes of someone like Davy Knowles or Johnny A can be lumped in with greats like that. Not trying to offend anyone, but come on.

Re: OT: Who do you think is the best guitarist right now
While i agree with guys like Clapton Gilmour and Page, none of them except for Satriani and slow hand are putting out new material. Granted i think Page is the greatest guitarist ever, he has such a wide variety of playing styles and has mastered most, he hasnt put anything out lately. Davy is young, give him a few years and he'll be know world wideWendigo wrote:Well does "best" mean technically or "best" songwriter/guitarist?
