Got the OMEC: watch out!
It came today- cleaned it up, took a bunch of pix inside & out- bought new correct value fuses, and now about to power it up. If power goes out on the Eastern Seaboard, you'll know why.

Re: Got the OMEC: watch out!
Well, surprisingly, it lit up! Some crackling noises and noise from the reverb a bit but no through signal. It switches channels 1-4 but definitely needs some stuff fixed. The number 3 button on the footswitch doesn't light up but it switches. Wish I had a manual... this thing is amazingly cool for 1975. (Reverb tank has a 74 date code)
When I opened it up, the filter caps are so big they scared the crap out of me! I'm not touching ANYTHING electronic in this thing!
Hopefully the guy who has the schematics emails them to me soon...
Downloading the camera right now... link soon!

That thing's a work of art on the inside. Is that a toroidal transformer?
I'm digging the blue gain knob on the back - is that for the headphone level?
I realize you may not have all the answers yet
If you can't find an amp tech that is comfortable working on it, you might try to track down someone who restores arcade games or jukeboxes.

Re: Got the OMEC: watch out!
I have no idea how it works... I flicked the switch up on the back and the noise got VERY loud when I channel switched it. Have no idea how to adjust volume or anything but it clearly isn't working right. Wish I had a manual and schematic... there's a guy going to email me a schematic and hopefully soon!Randy Bass wrote:That thing's a work of art on the inside. Is that a toroidal transformer?

What's a toroidal transformer?

The big donut-shaped thing inside the amp...maybe.bclaire wrote:...What's a toroidal transformer?
The brochure that you posted leads me to believe that the volume levels are preset for each program/setting, but I'm not sure that helps. There has to be someone at Orange who has some idea how it works or who designed it for OMEC.

Sir Randy is right, it's a different way to have a transformer (many think a better way, depending on the design/application):

That looks cool... sort of like there should be a robot from Buck Rogers playing it...

Re: Got the OMEC: watch out!
Cliff emailed me this morning:
Hi Billy,
That's amazing. It is so rare. I don't have schematics but I do have a main circuit board if it helps believe only 4 were ever completely finished for sale. Would be great if you could trace history. I believe you have the only one in existence. It would be so special if you could get it working. I do hope you are keeping well.
Very best wishes
Cliff

Wow that's crazy! That's got to be worth A LOT more than what you paid, especially if you can get it working!

Billy, we need to get this thing working so we can submit it AND you to magazines. Based on what Cliff said you have probably the single most rare Orange product ever made. Let's figure this out!!!
