I can't recommend one enough
I love my am std. tele, black with maple neck. The newer AM std. necks are just the best, it's what sold me on the guitar.
9.5" radius, and they've got the satin finish on the back of the neck so it feels nice and quick, and rolled fretboard edges, it just plays perfect.
The one I picked up has just an awesome resonance to it too.

Ha! I have the same problem, except replace "mom" with "student loan companies" and replace "$5000" with $30K! It hurts, don't it?
Mine is 60k... :(

Thurston Moore uses a 5150 and when I saw them live last year he sounded suuuper amazing so I guess good sounds can be had with a Peavey. Maybe Steven was borrowing Thurston's amp. :)

I used to be in a band with a guy about 12 years ago that had a 5150. It's good for metal. I don't know how Thurston gets the sounds he does, maybe he just uses it clean and uses all his pedals for overdrive. Sonic Youth's guitar tones are quite the mystery.

Yeah, I knew Thurston squeezes some good tones out of his 5150, so there's a fair chance it actually was his. I think they both use pedals for drive on top of some good clean tone.

Thurston at one point or another used a Peavey roadmaster head.

I love how he's got tape over the logo..
The amp itself looks like a beast at 160W.. There seem to be a few versions, I found one schematic with a quad of 6550's, and another with 6x6L6's.

Just tons of good clean power. A platform for accurate amplification/reproduction of his guitar and effects.. I would think no real distinct tonal characteristics from the amp itself.
