Damn that AD50 is hot

Post by TESLA_EL34 » Wed Sep 29, 2010 12:39 am

Just listend some demos and i think the custom shop ad50 is one of the best
amps i've ever heared....and i'm very very picky. I'm actually kind of a matamp snop,
but i think the AD50 has this matamp "breath" and a very good tone. You don't need any distortion pedal
with that amp.

I wonder how it works with FX. Actually the 30Watt Class A mode is quite interesting aswell.
Might be an amp for me and i'm thinking about saving money...

I've heard rumours that it is too fuzzy.
Probably just some sort of malicious lies

the fuzzieness is a big part of the tubes you have in an amp.
for example the EH6CA7 is quite fuzzy when the amp is cranked up...
doesn't j.page use that amp on stage?

Tesla,
Where did you hear these clips? Any links? I thought Mr. Page was known for using a single-channel AD30 onstage...

Way more down to the circuit than the valves.

Oranges are kind of... well I prefer to call it 'HAIRY' myself!

Yeah, I'll bet the AD50 is a real ('scuse the pun  ) peach of an Orange!

I have a Retro 50 which is very similar to the AD50 only a little darker sounding and your correct, the tubes you put in the amp make a big difference in the tone & response. I find that the simpler the circuit is the more it responds to different brands and types of tubes. The Retro & AD are very simple circuits but that is what makes them sound so pure, sweet and organic. A Mesa Boogie (nice amp) on the other hand is a very complex circuit (lots of switches, push/pull knobs, effects loops, multiple power options, etc) and I've found that tubes changes have minimal effect on the tone, IMHO. So if your in the "less is more" crowd the Retro 50 & AD50 are killer tone machines, I like to use mine with a Visual Sound Route 66 pedal, using the compressor part to adjust the clean headroom and the OD part for kicking up leads, also I use a Fulltone Wah and a MXR Cabon Copy delay, with this simple rig I can get a lot of different sounds.

Hmmmm, dunno about that. I've actually found my Mesa Boogie (Subway Reverb - one of the slightly simpler ones) to be the fussiest of all my amps with different valves!

Certainly I agree that changing valves can change the sound of an amp, sometimes fairly dramatically. But the point I was making is that the particular type of valves used is a relatively small part of the sound of an amp compared to the actual circuit design. Otherwise all 4 x EL34 amps would sound like Marshalls, and all 4 x EL84 amps like Voxes - which they clearly don't!

I got to try one and I thought it was fantastic, I was concerned about the fuzz based comments but I reckon 'hairy' is a good term to describe it, definately not 'too fuzzy' in the sence that you lose any definition or feel.....great piece of kit.....saving as hard as possible so I can get my hands on one asap!

The fuzz (or a bit harsh/messy overdrive) in my Retro disapeared when switching from noname shipped preampvalves to NOS GE12ax7, and now it sounds unbelievable great with almost any knob-setting.
A cheap expence, pluss maybe even an investment if its correct that the NOS last much longer than regulars.

like i said it's sometimes also a matter of the tubes.
the GE is a very clear tube.

you could also try RCA's and some other ...
V1 makes the biggest difference. the phase inverter too.
please don't use a balanced tube there, it's all bullshit.
accept darkness.
