Gibson SG Menace - advice needed

Post by kmlabs » Fri Aug 06, 2010 10:00 am

Hey guys,

NOTE: Billy, if this breaks the rules please delete it and accept my apologies.

My friend has an SG Menace which he bought on a whim a fee years ago. He's a bedroom enthusiast, it's never been out of his house, so it's in mint condish (apart from some dust, I expect!).

He's a bit strapped for cash at the moment so he's looking to sell, and asked me what it's worth. I can't find any on the 'Bay, and it's discontinued now. Standard SGs seem to be anywhere between £500 & £900, does anyone have any idea what it's worth? I'm toying with the idea of making him an offer myself!

hey Kenny,

I found some quotes from harmony central that put that guitar in or around the 800-900 USD mark new so i guess with the prices of standards now-a-days you could prob pitch with around 600?

i downloaded your EP too man really enjoyed it, nice and raw, good work eh!

There was one up on the MR forums for £990, which had zero interest. I imagine £650-750 would nail it.

This just popped up on Dallas, Texas craigslist. It's a les paul though. But the price is $600 USD.

It retails between the std and the special. Is it a funny colour or are they just in black?

I'd say 600 quid, and a bit less if you don't like him much!

I think £600 is way too high - trade second hand prices on standards is about £400 best price, and the menace wasn't a great guitar.

Just see how low you can get it!

I got my standard for about £490 about 2 years ago in pretty much mint condition, so i reckon what with guitar prices rising over the past couple year I'd say around £400 top end.

that is £400 trade, not £400 retail for s/h, but I wouldn't want to pay more than trade on anything anyway!

In the end, the guitar is only worth whatever the guy thinks he wants to have for it. Keep a value of between 400-500 quid in the back of your head, and ASK HIM what he wants for it. If he asks for too much, you are under no obligation to buy it. If he asks you what you want to pay then, try not to insult him. If your mark of around 400-500 seems insulting, just say you cant afford it. If his price is close to yours, make an offer.

Thanks for all the advice guys!

I told my friend what everyone on here had said and he told me I could have it for £400. He brought it round to mine and I really liked it so the deal is done.

Sadly, talking about the Menace series reminded me of how much I used to lust after a Voodoo Les Paul... so out of curiosity I had a look on the 'Bay... and guess what? There was one on there, for a reasonable price... so I bought that too...

*looks sheepish*

...I'm glad I did though, it's awesome! I know the looks aren't to everybody's taste, but I think it looks ace. And more importantly, it plays like a dream and breathes fire through my 'verb :)

Well, congratulations on both purchases! That's pretty cool... and it's all about how it sounds through your amp!
