I've made my purchase.

I decided on the Macbook Pro 13" and the M-Audio Ultra interface. (4 inputs)

I think this, using GarageBand, will be a good starting point for me, and if I feel anything could use an upgrade I'll just check out the cool stuff everyone suggested. :)
Word. Have fun! You'll love the computer. It's way more intuitive than a PC once you get used to the work flow.

I think you'll be very happy and surprised at what you do with Garageband. Good choice there. Let us know how you like it.

You're gonna love it! And if you ever take your laptop somewhere else to record, you will be extremely happy with its rugged portability and ease of setup.

I've used Garageband a bit, still use it a lot actually for bouncing mp3s (Pro Tools LE doesn't let me do this unless i shell out more money for it!) It's a cool program, very user friendly and allows you to get things done quickly. Helps keep the vibe alive.

In the long run you may want to think of upgrading to Logic. I'd advise not to go with Pro Tools unless you need to use it for compatibility with other studios. LE and M-powered have some very annoying limitations that allow Avid to get away with charging thousands for PTHD (because it's the "industry standard") However if you got a copy of M-powered with your interface (which I believe you should?) then obviously there's no harm in getting to grips with it.

Happy recording!
Josh
