Tube Screamer Turbo!

I just got one, and I'm wondering if anyone has had any experience with them. It seems to be an interesting pedal, but I feel like I want just a smidge more top end / high mids out of it. Am I crazy?

Ive been looking at tube screemers so i'll be interested in a little review if possible. The turbo is the one with 4 knobs yeah?

Yup. I've heard the best TS use is to have the drive knob down low and the level knob up high to push tube amps into distortion. The turbo mode has TONS of volume, as a clean boost the pedal isn't bad at all. It just seems a little thick. Then again, this could be because I'm running it through my Orange. I should try it through my Carvin.

You mean the TS9DX? I have one. I found it to be useable, if not entirely impressive, but especially so for the thicker sounds you get from the + hot and turbo settings. It seemed to be lacking in available distortion though. AnalogMans description is dead on.

Ultimately, I took it out of my chain. Not because of how it sounded when it was on, but when it was off it was killing my tone. Added some hair to it, like if there was a blend knob down really low. It really sounded crappy, so I 86'd it. I think it was just the one I had though. I hear that they are not usually bad with this.

I probably used it most in the TS9 mode and in Turbo mode. Never really used it as a boost. I have a Sparkle Drive now which I ultimately like much more, but sometimes I wish I still had that bass boost i got with the other modes. Just couldn't take the tone sucking.

Yeah, I'm going to try it out with a buffer before hand to see if it gets any tone suck. TS pedals are classic for this kind of thing, but not always true of them.

I just bought a TS9 reissue from a guy on hamony central. I'm really interested in seeing how it interacts with my orange. Got it a good price, so I'm sure i can get rid of it in the case that I don't like it, but before that I plan on swapping the input cap and resistor to get some more low end in there and bump up the gain a bit. I'm liking the idea of using it as a boost. I'm hoping it will help some fast single note stuff pop out a bit more. They just look so cool, lol.

Yeah the Turbo Tube Scream is actually a very versatile pedal. I just wish that mine didn't have that tone sucking. Otherwise I would send it out to Analogman and get his mods done to it, but he doesn't offer true bypass. Then it would be truly awesome. He seems to like this pedal best of all the modded Ibanez TS types. Keeley does a mod too which includes TB but I would just rather the AnalogMan mods.

I have the TS9DX turbo Keeley modded version, and I haven't used it in yrs. I just never could get a good warm overdrive sound out of it. Believe it or not I like my $40 CTO-1 better...

Cool, thanks for the additional input on the pedal. I was playing it last night at relatively low volumes and I was liking it on the TS9 setting. I might just sell it and make a TS-clone. No sense in letting a good name brand pedal go to waste on my board. ;)

FWIW, I never really had good luck getting really good sounds out of it at low volumes. I think I needed to have it through an amp that was at a decent level to make it sound good. But maybe that was just mine. Same thing with my sparkle drive though (ts808 clone).

Can someone please clarify this for me, I have never fully understood...

What is the difference between a tube screamer and a clean boost?

The clean boost function on my Boss GE-7 basically just added a bit more hair to the tone. I have yet to try a tube screamer out so I don't have much comparison....

Tube screamer is basically a clean boost with a clipping(distortion) section built in as well. Turn down the clipping and turn up the level and you get a clean boost (clean being relative to how clean it will actually go, depends on the pedal, etc).

tube screamer is pretty much an overdrive. not really what I would consider a distortion pedal. if you get the right one it sounds very good, in my opinion.
