Woah, these pedals SUCK! (With my Orange...)

Post by niangelo » Tue Apr 06, 2010 4:24 am

Well, I just cannot get an usable signal out of my Keeley Fuzz Head. The pedal sounds awesome though my brother's 6l6-type amp, but through my AD30? A mess. Not a single distinct, useful bit of sound. I'm selling it quick.

What drive/OD/low-fi-distortron-apocalypse vibe pedal rubbed you the wrong way through an Orange?

I've never had a usable fuzz with either of my Orange amps (RV50 and DT).
Even the original Big Muff which tends to sound great all the time ends up sounding like a hollow mess.

I had a Death by Audio Fuzz War that sounded great when put in front of a clean fender style amp, but when engaged with my orange, whether clean or with gain, it sucked all the midrange right out of the amp and the sound just disappeared in a band setting. I also tried a Death by Audio Soundwave Breakdown and had a similar experience. To tell you the truth, I've had no luck with any distortion pedal at all and am sticking with boost pedals. I love the natural distortion of my amp with all my heart and was only toying around with pedals to see what kind of variety of sounds I could get, but in the end I got my Orange for the sound of the amp and am happy if thats all I get. I also could seem to get any kind of Octave pedal to play nice. Same very noticeable cut in frequency. It does love delay and modulation, though.

Fuzzhugger's "Algal Bloom" is one of the best on the market right now (my opinion), sound great through my Oranges...no mid suck/treble suck...harmonics for days :D

Can't say I liked the Maxon OD9.

I plugged in my Boss FZ-2 and was really, really underwhelmed. The thing is usually Electric Wizard in a box and I got really confused when I first plugged it into my Tiny Terror and was met with a useless, dead tone. Still sounds great through my Blackheart, though :) .

I retract my statement about the Big Muff. The NYC Big Muff and Green Russian Civil War clone both sound balls-awesome through the Rocker 30.

Well, I'm not sure if you've thought of investing in such a device as the Radial Loopbone. This thing is sick, though it is expensive, I'm sure you could find one used on ebay or something. There's also the Radial BigShot EFX true bypass, which is basically the same thing but less options. I would check into these pedals if you're worried about pedals affecting your overall tone. Though, I haven't gotten to play many dist/OD pedals through my AD30 so I'll have to in order to truly see what you're talking about.

Try the "You dirty rat" from proco....a classic, as well as being really cheap. One of the best fuzzes I've heard and sounds great through my RV50C at least.

+1 for proco
I have the rat 2 and love it with the ad30

fuzz pedals sound best through the ad30 if you max the vol and use the gain as your volume control. if you play with a little breakup most fuzzpedals just produce lots of dirt (in a bad way)

+1. However, I could find some useful sounds with my Big Muff if I plugged it through the loop actually.

+1 to this, it's absolutely essential to do it this way to get most dirt pedals to work with the AD30, and indeed the TT when I had it!

The worst pedal i heard through my rocker 30, to my taste of course.
The little big muff was the best fuzz i've tried so far, but blending it in with the dirty channel didn't work for me, on the clean channel it was nice.
I also tried the f-bomb from subdecay, it misses bite on my amp.
Tried it on a roland cube 30 and it sounded great.

Haha see this just goes to show that people need to try several different things for themselves, as nobody can know what you hear in your head as the "perfect tone". What about a good old fuzzface?; they always seem to sound good to me....

Barber Trifecta sounds great on RV50, American Big Muff was terrible on the same amp.
