OK, I know Matamp & Green amps are more often seen in the stoner/doom world, but a fair share of the big crunchers use Orange gear, too. Who else likes to satisfy their noise/garage/psychedelic/sludge leanings with a juicy Orange?

(Waiting to buy, myself ... $$$ issues.....)

I'm in a few bands right now, one is a harder post-punk dealie the other is a much more old-school indie rock band (yo la tengo meets some of the mellower superchunk). I jammed with some rock guys the other day, slapped some sovtek 12ax7lps preamp tubes into the orange, and it was a complete rock out/tons of gain tone machine.

I use an Orange Overdrive series 2 for my psychedelic rock blues funk folk explosion. How could I use anything less colourful????? hahaha.
Anyone think its worthwhile sticking castors onto my speaker cab? Or will I ruin it. (not that its an orange!) Anyone know where I could get a cheap Orange 4x12cab????

A cheap Orange 4x12 do they make such a thing? http://www.lookwest.com/orange.html
gearnut turned me on to this site. Run by Matamp i believe. These are the 90's cabinet's i think. They were made out of particial board i believe. Just to let you know. BTW I use a AD30TC Head and a 70's Graphic OR120 for my flavor of Rock. AWESOME TONE!! Nothing says stoner rock more than a OR120!!

I've got a 4x12 Orange cabinet on order. I'll be pushing it with a JCM 2000 DSL. Our sound is doomy/blackend blues. I'd like to get an AD 140TC head, but I don't know if it will have the robust distortion the Marshall has. Anyone ever gone head-to-head with a newer Marshall and newer Orange??

If it's relevant, I just got rid of my 80s JCM 800 in favor of my 70s OR120 overdrive. The Orange overdrive is just more saturated with harmonics and the bottom end is just plain amazing. I run my gain and volume at 6 and put a Tube Screamer on the front end (not that it really needs it, I just like the way it opens up the trebles). I play in the vein of Smashing Pumpkins and Fugazi (although I'm not as good as those guys).

Orange amps put the rock in stoner rock! The other part you do yourself.
They are great amps. No gimmicks, just straight forward amplification.
No need for added doodads on the amp. A couple pedals is all you might need.
An amp should be an amp, effects can be pedals!!! Orange's are true amps!

i gots both an orange or120 (70's) and an 80's jcm 800 2210. i love them both but if push came to shove the orange would win. the marshall i have is just a little too buzzy sounding whereas the orange is just so rounded and smooth and creamy and chocolaty!!!!! the orange is next to god in sound. i play very heavy from zep to metalica to soundgarden to marilyn manson, use a pro co rat and reckon with the right pedal an orange amp can do just about everything. i'd love to hear a fulldrive 2 thru an orange. the only pedal ive tried that the orange didnt like was an ibanez sm7, it sounded poo but the sm7 sounds great thru my fender princeton. i use an sd-1 thru the marshall. les paul gold top with p90's thru all of it. but no amp in the world looks as good as an orange.

Orange is certainly the amp of choice when it comes to stoner rock, Cathedral, Kyuss, Clutch, all used the mighty Orange at some point.

My band Ninedenine have a kind of Perfect Circle meets Kyuss vibe, so that bottom end really punches through on the AD140b i use.

ive got a series two also. i stopped using pedals i like the tone so much. its truly a beast of an amp. i just turn back the contour (fac) and turn up bass and listen to your internal organs vibrate. its a beautiful thing.

Hey chickster, I am looking into buying an AD30TC head and you said that you own one along with an OR120 and an overdrive80. How does the sound of the AD30TC compare to the older models? I'm looking for a sound kind of like The Strokes guitar tone but a little crunchier if that helps. Which model would you recommend?

Well the Or120 is basically used as a clean tone and pedals for overdrive. The Od can be used as both clean or overdriven. The AD is more harmonic and not as loud as a 120 or 80. It can compete with the 80 but not as loud. For 30 watts though this thing can crank. As far as tone its close to the Od but not really if that makes any sense. It is abit more modern sounding. Not as foggy. The AD is alittle more sensitive to pick attack. With the added harmonics do to the Class "A" operation it has more crunch to it. Ofcourse preamp tubes can be a part in how much gain and ouput you have. With some Sovtek 12ax7lps's it has plenty of gain and crunch along with nice tight bass good mids and crisp to bright highs. Others will change the tone. JJ's i hear smooth it out abit. But you would just have to try some to get the tone your looking for and what guitar you use. I'd say if you want vintage Orange tone the Or or OD would work best. If you want a amp with good flexiblity great modern tone and not REALLY loud the AD is good. Its not really a pedal amp. You can use modulation pedals but overdrive/distortion pedals are'nt needed. It tends to add to much gain and goes to mudd. I have had little sucess with them. It can take a pedal with very little gain like a Zvex Fuzz Factory or similiar. THe Or can take any pedal and also get a great clean tone. The Od seems to not take pedals to well with the gain up but thats to be exspected. The Od can get a great clean tone to though with the gain backed off. Oh! the AD can get a great clean tone to if you throw in some 12at7's in channel one. Or back the gain down with some 12ax7's. Just depends on your taste. SOOO they all sound good. I would recommed any of these. They all cost about the same. For something like The Strokes [forgive me i have not heard their album yet] i'm not sure but the AD30TC may be good but the others may be better i guess i'm not sure. Maybe some more info would help.

Wow thanks for all the great info! it sounds like the AD30TC might be the one for me, i need a cleaner distortion (if that makes sense)instead of the more foggy vintage sound of the Od you described. You said its not very loud though, would it be able to cut through the entire band? i have a loud drummer. what about live, is it loud enough to play small clubs and bars?

Let's put it this way..... I've always been a loud player and granted, we're trying to make an effort to bring our stage volume down- but at the last small-ish club we played, I had the master on 1 and a half for both channels on my AD30TC combo and it was SCREAMIN'. If the drummer drowns out this amp, get a new drummer! and I don't think it's possible anyways.... Billy
