Hi,
I currently use a Thunderverb 50 with a PPC412 cabinet.
And this sounds amazing, but it takes so much effort to transport, it's so heavy and can't be carried alone...
I'm a freelance musician so I can't always rely on bandmates to help me carry my gear.
So I was thinking about selling my PCC412 and by a PPC212 (closed back) instead. Is there a big volume difference? And what about sound projection? With the PPC412 I can easely hear myself at rehearsals and don't need micing in small clubs, will the PPC212 do the job?
What do you guys think? What are the pro's and con's of the 2 different cabinets?

It will honestly sound 90% the same. It might be a little more difficult to hear yourself just because the speakers are lower, but the sound overall will be very close.

I agree - you won't lose that much volume or tone. Both are very directional, so you just have to get used to the sound coming from ankle-level only. You won't need to mic the PPC212 for volume, but it would help sound dispersal and monitoring. One point about the PPC212 - it is still awkwardly large and too bulky/heavy for one person to carry comfortably. I normally wouldn't think of the PPC212 Open Back as a match for the Thunderverb 50, but it is easier to carry and would give much better sound dispersal at the expense of tight bass response. It could work for you if you don't really need tight bass response.

One option is to keep the PPC412 and get an open back 212 from Avatar. Or have a pair of 212 cabs, one open back one closed back. Bigger gigs bring both. Smaller gigs bring one or the other.

I'm with Jon.
NOTHING sounds quite like a 412, no-matter what anybody tells you. I have the TV50 also, you want that 412 for the low end the amp is renowned/capable of.
It's kinda like having a Lamborghini and never getting out of second gear. Having said that, people do seem to rave about the PPC212's, and all Orange cabs in general, but blah.
I propose you buy another 412 and run a full.

The PPC212 is amazing in the world of 212 cabs, but it's not a 412, and in the world of 412 cabs, the PPC412 is a soul crusher. You will experience loss of bass response with the 212. That may be a worthwhile trade in your situation. It's really about weighing the priorities of your sound. I play very bass heavy, so it's not an option for me, but if your sound isn't bass heavy, you may be able to dial some back in. It is, however, Still very awkward to carry by yourself and I'd rather move the 412. You could fix removable casters to the 412 to make it easier to transport.

212's are cool, but you really can't beat the sound of a 412. Personally, I'd save my pennies and get the 212 to complement your 412. 6x12 stacks are cool as hell and you can alternate or combine the two if you want.
