Chose the Thunderverb 50 over the Rockerverb 50 today

Post by mliebs8 » Sun Mar 14, 2010 4:19 am

I had a chance to use a Rockerverb 50 overnight and didn't really care for it that much so I picked up a Thunderverb 50 today and couldn't be happier. I'm surprised you don't see more reviews on this amp, to me the EL34's sounded quite a bit better and fuller compared to the 6V6 Rockerverb. The attenuator feature by itself made the amp worth it. Anyway, since I haven't seen many reviews I thought I'd throw my .02 cents in.

Glad you found an Orange that suits you. Is the bass response of the TV50 the main tonal difference that you noticed between the two amps?

Actually the main difference is that the Thunderverb seems like it's a little darker than the Rockerverb and the disortion sounds more natural.

Edited the rest of the explanation. All I can say is I'm really happy with the amp. :D

Ah...No! But I get some sense of what you are trying to say. Our language doesn't cope really well with describing tone...

Contrats! Killer amp you have there! As a former RV50 owner, I think you made a good choice. There was a dead RV50 at my tech's shop the other day and he was going over a bunch of the issues with those amps, and I must agree, mine was in the shop twice during the year I owned it. I got rid of mine for an RV100 and love it, no issues what so ever (other than a blown pre-amp tube, easy fix myself).

I really enjoy my TV50. I really liked the RV50 and it had good enough low end for me. Tone wise the TV50 had a low end sound that was more appealing to me with the B.K.P. Warpigs I use in my Les Paul, standard tuning. Could go from hard driving gritty distortion to fuzz in a way that inspired me. I couldn't believe how full and dynamic my neck pickup sounded, I was hooked. When I crank channel B with shape and gain to 3:00 the bassist sits down, no need, however we can get some interesting harmonics going if our tuning is spot on.

Before some troll disputes my every word, no I have not played every amp ever made and yes I am sure there are others that can do the same, I simply haven't played one yet.

No amp made does exactly what the tv50 does.

I have tried the 200 and loved it. The lack of funds made me cry.
The 50 has got to be great a well.

The us navy paid for my thunderverb and my college. Not too bad for 6 years of my life I guess. I guess u could say I owe all my gear to all you American taxpayers. Not quite as pricy as my tomahawks you paid for though :)

The 50 and the 200 are separate animals for sure though. Both awesome and after a few years of musical growth um glad I went for the versatility of the 50. But having the 200 is like having a 2' xxxx. You may never find a use for it,but u can certainly say you haveit!

It comes in handy if you like playing really big "venues".

Kinda off subject but not really, I have the tv50 and love it too. My question is if i were to replace what i imagine is the stock tubes with newer jj's, jj's also currently in the amp, would i get even more of that amahgah sound. I see Eurotubes website has all kinds of sets of replacements for it that are supposedly to give you better sound.
Those who sacrifice tone for versatility deserve neither.

I like the mullards and winged cs better than the jjs. I actually like the stock Chinese one's better than the jjs. I'm using rubys right now. Great and cheap.

I got my TV50 amp with Winged C's so unfortunately I have no comparison. I do however have a set of winged C's on deck as I found the tone from them lacking in no way.

I also found the TV to be more of what I like than the RV. But this is based on VERY little experience with each.
