Singlecoils or Humbuckers?
hey guys
this is not a question about what is better or worse, i know that´s all a question of personal taste, i just found it interesting what do YOU like better, and why?
perhaps you like them both equally?
i´m just kind of curious what the general preference of the people here in the forum is?
I ´ll give my vote for singlecoils, since i love them for the rawness of their tone and their punchy percussiveness in rythm playing....humbuckers always sounded a bit too clear to me, kind of sterile.
here you go

Re: Singlecoils or Humbuckers?
neither, i prefer p-90's , but i suppose p-90's kind of are single coils so single coils
edit: forgot the why bit
i like how p-90s can get that raw crunchy rock tone when you want it, but can also get a smooth solo sound. they seem to be able to do nearly any sound i want.

Re: Singlecoils or Humbuckers?
I voted for humbuckers. I am currently really enjoying the single coils in my latest strat as there is only one way to get that sound for certain stuff. There just is no substitute. Having said that, I always go back to the buckers as I feel I can cover more ground.

Re: Singlecoils or Humbuckers?
For me its gotta be both (no poll optio for that ). My strat is set up HSS and one of my favorite Tele positions is the two pickups in series. Without a single coil in the neck on a 25.5" scale neck, you'll never get that great strat tone though - and I love that! I live there. BUT, in my band - we are pretty heavy - I spend most of the night in the bridge HB position. I gotta have both - or a good way to approximate both (funky wiring or Resonance Frequency adjustment (SD Pickup Booster)) - with one guitar.

Singles (especially lipstick pickups); because they are rattly, dirty, nasty and hateful when you distort them, and clean, innocent and chiming when you don't. This is even more true when they are put through an Orange, as they compliment the moody tone.

I'm a big fan of both but I prefer the range of single coils. Especially a good strat 2nd position. There's something about the in between sound that I love.

Humbucker:
I feel they're more versatile. Both can get great sounds, but I don't think you can get humbucker thickness with a single but you can get the hollowness of a single out of a humbucker.

Re: Singlecoils or Humbuckers?
I voted humbuckers.
I use buckers 90s and singles all on my SG alone. I'd say I use humbuckers 80% of the time, single coil 15% and the 90 5%. But I do love and cherish that non humbucking 20%. I have a P94 in the neck, 500T in the bridge and I have that coiltapped for single coil sounds at the bridge. This modded SG is my main #1, but if I don't have my strat or tele close at hand, I feel incomplete.

Re: Singlecoils or Humbuckers?
i'm voting both as well. my guitar is setup for both, so it's easy to flip between - i like the single coil's 'cause they're clear and raw, the 'bucker for it's power.

Both! That's why I got the hot rod Tele with the humbucker in the neck and single coil in the bridge.

It depends on the type music I am playing. For blues or rock I prefer single coils. For jazz ,I like humbuckers.

Re: Singlecoils or Humbuckers?
i have an gibson sg special with p-90s.
that little 6 pound guitar sounds bigger than a great white shark.
it has about the same amount of bite too.
