Stomp Box Sized Direct Injection Device?

Post by Tugboat30 » Tue Dec 29, 2009 11:08 am

Hi guys,

Throwing in a new topic (maybe there is or was already a discussion about that. If so, just forget this post).

What do you think about a direct injection preamp think in a neat package which can be easily installed on an effect/pedal board.

Please allow some thoughts:
- based on the Crush 30 (whithout the 'R' of course)
- built-in Speaker Sim (maybe similar to the H&K Red Box)
- 1 x Bypass, 1 x Channel Select

It should...
...run by either 12V DC or 9V DC (for easy integration)
...have a convenient size (4" by 6" ?)
and sound good of course

The reason why I am talking (well, writing) about this is I am an old fart with a bad back. Therefore, I don't feel like carrying around tons of stuff for small gig i.e. all the time. It has something charming to me to show up and giving the sound guy a microphone cable telling him this is the interconnexion point :D

Just think of a "small little cutlery" you would be draging around. And, you don't have to play without your trusted front end.

I know there is tons of equipment out there manufactered by...just name them, but wouldn't it be great having it made by Orange?

Well, I am a analog dinosaur somehow. nothing against the modelling stuff, but I like the anolog gear much more.

Any thoughts?

Thank you all very much in advance for reading.
Cheers,
Daniel

If you're basically after an 'amp in a pedal'-type thing, you could try these...

http://www.tech21nyc.com/products/sansa ... eries.html

The 'Liverpool' is an AC30-alike, and should get you Orangey tones. They have built-in speaker emulation, so will be fine straight to PA.

I have the VT, which simulates an Ampeg bass stack, and I'm pretty impressed with it! It even sounds good with guitar, check this video:

+1 to that. i was pretty impressed with the tech 21 line of pedals...pretty good sounding IMO. orange wouldn't do it tho, they're busy making real amps.

Fast response guys.

At Teddy, it was just a thought. But thanks for your advice. I have already a sort DI box I made myself:

Pretty straight forward.

At Nick, I don't like the Tech 21 stuff at all. To me (and that is my personal opinion - don't want to say they are making crap) all pedals steal somewhat of the original and specific sound of the guitar you play.

Well anyway. beside the fact that Orange is busy making real amps, like you say, it could be a thing used as a front end too in order to blow some orangey sound into whatever......
Cheers,
Daniel

I think a guy on here (Tiborange) makes tube-based pedals that are based on the sound of vintage Orange amps, as far as I can recall. Perhaps you should check out his stuff:

http://www.tiborange.com/index2.html

EHX released the 22 Caliber recently, which is a pedal-sized power amp - team one of those with an all-analogue preamp foot pedal and you've got yourself a mini floor-based, non-digital solution ;)

In the end though, carrying an amp like a TT combo to a gig isn't exactly much more work than carrying a pedal and will give oyu a far better sound. Pedals straight to the desk are great as a 'last resort', but I wouldn't rely on it as a main rig.

Hey great! Thanks a lot mate. I haven't known this guy yet.

That is damn right. I wouldn't pass on my amp either. What I meant was playing at realy realy small venues with tiny little stages etc. Nothing beats the real rig. That's for sure.

Daniel

tug - i agree with that a pedal can't get the real thing, but i sorta thought those tech pedals were neat. if you were so incline, you could probably rip out the guts of a little solid state amp and hook it up to something of the like for speaker emulation with an xlr out. i don't know how difficult it would be to do, but hey! anything's possible.

The innards of my Electro Harmonix Dirt Road Special would fit in a bit stomp box  To be honest I don't know why EHX don't do that, reissue it as a pedal - it's a fantastic little amp!

Any good preamp pedal really, then run it into a decent DI... that's your solution, i'd say.

Nick, Teddy,

Sorry, if my statement on the Tech 21 stuff was misleading. They are very well made and do their job well. What I meant, was...is my personal impression and experience.

But anyway, ripping out the guts from a solid state amp and fumbling them into a stomp box housing it's something I was close to do sometimes :D

There are only some difficulties: PCBs too big, pots soldered directly to the board......

The fact is, you can put almost every preamp into a stomp box. Well, maybe not those ones with tons of fancy gadgets (MIDI, FX-Loops,................). But basically spoken. Just look at the Warp Factor by H&K. That is indeed the preamp of their Warp 7 head. No joke. Okay, the EQ section is missing.

By the way, I played once live using only the Warp Factor and after that a Red Box right into a mixing desk. It worked! Soundwise a royal pain in the a%&
Cheers,
Daniel

I thought I had to chime in here. What if there's no desk? :? That TT or big amp might be your best friend then. I've played an ice hockey arena and when it came down to it the "sound crew" (we'll call them that) was just a DJ with some power amps for his speakers and stuff. No board, no instrument mics, nothing. I'm glad my 50 watt RV50 is loud enough to play that kind of room unmic'd as a last resort. Sure it wasn't the best sound in the world but the people still heard us.
