Rocker30 tubes , speakers

Post by ian68 » Sun Dec 27, 2009 8:45 pm

Hello i`m new and i would like to know you experiences with Rocker 30.I`ve discovered this amp some time ago and it seems to me that it`s good rocknroll amp/I use Hiwatt Custom 50 and i need something complimentary and classy with good overdrive.I have possibilty to buy used Rocker 30 combo so i need some tips to improve my knowledge in this subject.Usually i use NOS tubes so i`m curious what tubes you use with Rocker.I own some good speakers like Hellatones 60 (Vintage 30) and Scumbacks (Celestion G12H30) H75 in 2X12 so there is interesting field for experiments....

The Rocker 30 is a great Amp that will fill your Rock needs - think Indie / classic Rock - Ive never used a Hiwatt but I would of though that will also excell at Indie and Rock albeit with a different flavour.

Tubes, Ive used Svetlana winged Cs, EHX and Harma Str ( which I prefer) but this topic is covered regulary on this forum so have a look using the search option. Another plus about the Rocker is its Cathode based so u can change your own tubes without the need to get it biased

The Rocker 30 is a superb amp for Rock and blues. Loud, decent headroom, fabulous gain, simplicity itself with enormous potential to dial in lots of interesting sounds. It is a bit fussy with pedals though, especially overdrive units, so be careful what you use with it.
Best tubes I have used with the Rocker 30 are the Svetlana 'Winged C'. I find the sound slightly brighter with these tubes, which is complimentary to my Strat sound.
I just stayed with the standard issue Vintage 30s in my OB 212 cabinet. Some on here dont like them, but I do, though I may experiment sometime soon and swap one out for something else, maybe a G12 Century Vintage or maybe even a Greenback.......see what it sounds like.

I think you should buy it, then try all your different speakers in it and tell us what it sounds like! ;)

Nothing beats a I63 Mullard in the V1 position. Got one in my R30 and it is sooo sweet! The grind and the midrange is perfect...

I love my R30, and I've tried a few things in it. KT77 power tubes (JJs) would be great to get a fun sound, very thick and fuzzy in a great way. I also enjoy the EH EL34 types and variants.

Yes.

If using NOS ones you'd be wise to have a bias check - even though the amp is cathode biased. Modern ones should just slot in and work fine though. Apparently giving more bass response - though I've not tried them myself.

Sorry for taking over the thread, but I have one more question. Which preamp tubes are what in the R30?

Counting from the instrument input end:
#1: 1/2 = Natural channels single gain stage, 1/2 the Dirty channels first gain stage.
#2: The two halves are the Dirty channels 2nd and 3rd gain stages.
#3: Phase inverter.

Okay, cool, thanks Andy! I wasn't sure where the phase inverter tube was.
