Which cab to go with rv50 ?

Post by josh18t » Sat Dec 26, 2009 5:12 pm

Hi guys Im a new member. I used to have a rocker 30 combo and for the last year I've been playing a marshall jvm410 stack but now Im selling that to get the rockerverb 50.

I definitely don't need a 4x12 cab but Im stuck between the open-back 2x12, closed-back 2x12 and the 1x12 orange cabs.

I've read the other posts about this but just wanted to see what the metal/hardcore players opinions are on this, as the amp is only to be used in the bedroom and studio. I will also be using an attenuator to crank the amp when practicing on my own.

Id imagine that the closed back would give you a better bite and faster response but would love some input.

Cheers :)

for metal/hardcore go for the 2x12 closed back. it will sound tighter and punchier.

+1 for CB 212.

Definitely better for heavier music, or just providing a more directional massive Orange tone.

I havent tried their OB, but I had an OB Fender combo sometime back, and it was not for me. Nice room filling 'floatiness', but I wanted something really huge sounding like the PPC412, but with less bulk and weight.

I know it's OT... but a 50W valve amp for "only" bedroom and studio use???

FWIW, I say save your pennies and get a lower-wattage, more affordable amp, like the TT!

You need a pair of 412 CBs and a pair of 212 CBs. Two 3/4 stacks on either side of your bedroom is gonna be so choice. Dream big.

Well, the bedroom thing aside, if you play heavy music, get a 4X12. I went with a 2X12 when I got my RV5,0 and though it sounds good, I wasn't getting the thump I wanted. Once I got a solid 4X12, it was heaven. Still use the 2X12 when playing other styles of music, but for metal/hard rock/ whatever you want to call it, you might want to look at the big dog.

just because you play in your bedroom or studio only, doesn't mean you should by a small amp like the TT. If you like the tone of the big fuckers, then buy the big fuckers. I 2nd a 4x12, but if staying with the 2x12 mindset, get the closed back. You could always build an open back style rear cover, and alternate it for experimentation.

this may go against some die hard orange people but when i picked up my orange i went with a Mesa rectifier 212 vertical slant. The RV 50 fits perfectly on top of it. It has some height and the top speaker slants back a little. Also has a 10" smaller footprint than a 212 or 412 cab. I will admit that the orange 412 sounded the best of all the cabs I tried but I couldn't tell a huge difference in the 212s. Most things traded off between the 212 cabs.
