Leave on Standby before I switch off?

Post by spectre » Sun Dec 20, 2009 1:48 pm

Hey guys..... just curious, do I need to leave my amp on standby before I switch it off?

Or can I just flick it from On to Off?

Cheers.

Yes...depending on the tube type it will be half a minute or so...I leave mine on standby for about 2 minutes or more before shut down.

not necessary - you can go right from 'ON' to 'OFF'

Standby is only important when powering 'ON'

Cool...... I do tend to leave it for about a minute before powering down on my RK30. I guess there's no harm either way.

Nice 1.

Yeah, no real harm in it.

I tend to - when at home or practising - just strum the strings and flick it off whilst they're ringing. I can't remember why, but someone told me it's helpful. Maybe draining the caps of charge...?

Kittenface is right though, it's generally more helpful when powering on just to warm things up.

If you go straight off instead of Standby first, on most tube amps you dump the caps which is a good thing.

I always turn down my guitar knobs to kill the signal before turning the amp to standby (and then off). I have heard that it is not good to feed signal to the amp when it is on standby. It's funny how operating tube amps seems to be guided by superstitions and rumors. The voodoo makes it more fun.

Totally unnecessary. The tubes doesn't need to cool down in any way to prepare for a shut down. Even pulling the power cord is an OK way to kill the amp.
Actually I would put my money on the going into standby mode first would do more damage to the amp than the other way around. I don't have a technical argue to strengthen this though, but I'm sure Andy will chip in pretty soon and shoot me down completely with +1000 word report on the subject.

Turning down the guitars volume is definitely a waste of time. Better to turn down the amp's volume instead.

Wow, there is a lot of bunk on this topic. Yeah. There's no need to turn your amp off any way. If you're going to try to drain the caps, just open the thing up and drain it how you should before working on an amp.

Playing into an amp that has been switched off will send signal to the tubes, drawing juice from the power supply caps, and you'll hear it fade out as the juice from the power supply fades away. No harm done.
