Buying a Jazzmaster!

Hey guys I have been wanting a Jazzmaster for a while now. A lot of my favorite bands play them like Brand, Jellyfish, and Edison Glass. So I was looking at the Jazzmaster Special for $899 at GC this morning.

Anyway it was pretty nice. But then I saw a used J Mascis Jazzmaster sitting there for $799. Played that and loved it. Didn't hear a lot of difference but maybe a little more dirt in the Mascis. Did some research and after all the bad metal distortion youtube reviews I found some good stuff and called GC talked them down to $700+tax. I think it is pretty wild. Does anyone here have any experience with this guitar? You guys think $700 is good?

Really nice guitar, loved playing it. Just couldnt get over the purple sparkle paint, put me off a bit.

But other than that lovely guitar!

That's a fine deal on a new Mascis. The Mascis is an interesting hybrid that sort of fixes some of what's messed up about a jm but screws-up what's good about 'em all at the same time. The tune-o-matic bridge and altered break angle really changes the guitar. (FWIW, the CP jm also places the tailpiece assembly at the "wrong" spot.) The pu's are different from standard jm issue. Not sure about the neck profile/fret size...

Anyhow, cool. And more power to you for rockin' a sparkly purple guitar!

Im not a fan of the Purple Sparkle finish, but I do like it better than the Classic. Based on their new pricing, I would say the used J Mascis is a better price for a better guitar, provided that it is like new. Here is the link to the J Mascis:

The only Jazzmaster I would consider is the Thurston Moore, but it is considerably more money:

between my lp and the tele the jazzmaster essentially became a very awesome looking doorstop

yea im going for the J Mascis. If it becomes a doorstop like Van Cleef i'll trade/sell it off for something else. Im getting a great price on it.

I agree....... Thurston's Jazzmaster is a beauty........ I'm certainly a fan of mascis' sparkly purple........

but it don't get much better than this......... I'm guessing it'll easily cost over £5K. Thats a lot of quiche! but WOW!!! Sweet Baby Jesus!

I once played it and it felt to big for me. Neck is really fat and the body to (compared to my tele), but then I'm not that tall and some people like massive guitars (guess it's not called JAZZmaster for nothing)

i have a feeling the mascis is basically the same guitar as the other one but with a funkier paint job being its only significant difference.

i would imagine that the woods are the same quality....have you tried craigslist?

Here is the difference. And yes the woods are different. Plus im getting the Mascis for $200 cheaper then i would the Jazzmaster Special.
