OT: Giving up and starting again

Post by Mossbank » Mon Nov 09, 2009 8:00 pm

Not the guitar! That's the only thing that'll keep me sane.

After 15 years in the same industry, I left London today after nine of those years and am now sat at my folks' home with my girlfriend. We've got two weeks here to say our goodbyes before moving to New Zealand (my GF is a Kiwi).

Anyone else out there relocated to another part of the world? What am DOING?

PS: Was SO glad to get out of London though...

Well, not quite that big of a move, but I moved from the Detroit, Michigan area to Stamford, Connecticut this summer. My wife has a bachelor's degree in fashion design and art, so as you can imagine, there aren't many fashion jobs in Michigan. So we moved to Stamford, as it is a suburb of NYC, which is the fashion center of the U.S.

It's hard... I miss my family and friends, and I find that I miss really silly things I never thought I'd miss (like a bar/pub I liked back home, or our old neighborhood, or the local guitar shop I used to go to, etc.). But I will tell you, it is a lot easier missing all those things than it would've been to try and miss my wife. Hopefully you feel the same. If so, good decision, don't regret it!

I moved from Houston to London. Came back after 3 years. That was enough.

mine isn't that outrageous. I moved from Austin to Syracuse. Minus the freezing cold, the yanks, all houses being 3 story wooden houses, and the lack of overwhelming entertainment downtown... it isn't that much different.

You don't have to give up everything, this forum will still be here.

Just think, you'll be leaving a place full of foreigners to become a foreigner yourself

Just try not to be like most foreigners and winge to the locals about how good it is back home. Don't you just wish those people would go home.

I have some friends preparing to go to NZ early next year. All reports make it sound attractive in so many respects and after the smoke I think it sounds like you'll enjoy it.

Good luck and keep us posted on the improvements in your life.
Here we go; three, four...

Haha, I know how you're feeling. I've still got 6 weeks left but I'm starting to think "Am I doing the right thing? What if I don't like it?" etc!

I think you just have to embrace it and give it a go. As ESBlonde mentioned, I think you have to not compare it to 'home' but look at it as a new start for you both! Best of luck!

I am doing the opposite!

Moving from a small town in the North East to London. I need a busy life, plus my law career should go better down there. No law firms near me that pay a decent wage.

Good luck!

I have recently moved from Halifax to Ottawa. Again, not on the same level as the England to New Zealand but it's an adjustment, nonetheless. Having grown up next to the ocean, I am missing that the most!

Man I envy you!!
Zew Zealand is a beautiful place....strange culture, but you got everything there from beaches to glaciers to forests....you name it.
Very like my native Scotland in many ways. Great place for a loner like me. Fishing is second to none, water sports awesome. Walking is fantastic.

I would be there now but for elderly parents vesus a 30 hour flight back to UK for emergencies!!

Enjoy !!

We're off to Auckland, so I'm looking at it like swapping one city for another, only with a lot less people and more green trees.

After sitting up here in the cold and wet North West of England for a few days, it doesn't feel odd at all that I've just given up my job and London way of life. I'm taking that as a good omen!

A lot of people say I'll miss the big name bands over there. But I've already got tickets for Lamb Of God and Faith No More. Can't be that bad...?
