#2 Pencil lead on your nut and saddles anyone?

Post by BrianFantana » Sat Nov 07, 2009 3:43 am

Anyone here use it? Does graphite actually help tuning stability?

The guitar in question is a Les Paul.

Thanks!!!!!

Yup. I do this when I change strings, and it seems to help a bit.

I use Big Bend's Nut Sauce. It's a graphite based lube. I've done the pencil lead thing when I've run out though. It really does help.

I do this liberally w/ all my guitars whenever I change strings.

I'd like to try Nut Sauce, but that stuff is dang expensive. I'm sure it's great stuff...but #2 pencil lead is free!

Plus 1 on the nut sauce. It's not terribly expensive considering how long it lasts, and how much you spend on the amps, guitars, and strings.

Old school - I use pencil lead.

Just grab a swiss army knife and shave it into the slot. Works very well... no need to buy nut sauce then.

I've been doing this for as long as I can remember... with a 2B.

Have been using pencil lead since I first ever changed my strings. On the SG, my strings are ONLY out of tune if I knock the machine heads, otherwise it is as steady as a rock.

I use Big Bends Nut Sauce, was previous using a WD40 pen applicator! ;) Two of my guitars have Graphtech saddles, so don't bother on them. To be honest, none of this seems to have reduced string breakage frequency for me... YMMV.

Yes it really does work particulary on my SG which before never seemed to play an open D chord in tune, much improved now

I have a LOT of tuning problems and can rarely keep my guitar in tune (perfectly as I tuned it) for more than one song. Maybe this will help?

My tech keeps it lubed up when it gets worked on but I do a few string changes in between the times it gets worked on. Would using good old #2 help with tuning stability every time I change strings?
