a question to all ad200b user

Post by bulldozer » Sat Sep 12, 2009 7:57 pm

when starts your amp to crunch/overdrive. when i use my "ampeg dan armstrong" my amp starts to sound dirty at 9:30 o´clock! a friend can tune to 12 o´clock with his fender jazz bass and it sounds clean.

ok, when will it drive dirty and wihich bass you use too?

well.. my mk1 doesn't start to sound dirty at all before 1 o'clock on both gain and master.
It depends on what you mean by "dirty" in this case...

yeah i figured that you meant overdrive. The thing is, clean is a relatively wide definition which reaches from zero to the sweetspot which is exactly where the amp doesn't overdrive but will if you play harder. (For me atleast that is my definition)
On my amp with my ampeg 8x10 (no horn) the sweetspot is about 1 o'clock on gain+master combined. the gain is the key to clean or distorted sound... To be honest, my amp hardly distorts at all combined with my ampeg.

The mk3 has more preamptubes than the mk1&mk2 and i still haven't played the mk3. It will distort earlier.

My MK III changes over as macahan says, around 1:00

I wonder if you should use the "active" input?

It's your bass more than anything. Dan Armstrong's have extremely hot pickups and they will send an amp into overdrive much earlier than any other bass just about. I borrowed a DA bass and it was unbelievably hot...

Yes, i can´t belive this. My Dan Amrstrong is so hot!!! I took a Fender, a Sandberg and a Wal to check my Amp. What can i say, my Orange overdrive with my DA at 10 o´clock and with the other basses at 12 o´clock or later. I couldn´t belive that a passiv bass has a so hot output. But it sound good.

Try using the "Active" input. I do that when I am switching between a "hot" and "cooler" bass so I do not have to change the settings on the amp as much.

This seems totally normal dude! Hot pickups probs means you should try using the active input.

I really like the sweet spot gain point where it starts to sound dirty.

I also LOVE it when you crank the gain to almost full and have the volume fairly low....the bass distortion is SO nice and powerful.

Still love my amp....

Since I play active basses I've got a 5751 in V2 to lower the gain just a bit so that I have more range. That way my sweet spot is right around 10 or 11 o'clock from the active input. I also run some high output effects so I need a little bit of headroom to accommodate.

That's a great idea. I'll have to try it when I borrow Sheryl's DA again. I would never have thought of trying that since it's a passive pickup...
