its made in uk, not in the far east and i think it was designed to sound similar to marshall 18 watter
the only downfall is 10 inch speaker imho

Looks nice from the pics, I have to agree the 10 inch speaker would be a downfall to the amp. I have never been a fan of an amp with any speaker smaller than a 12 inch. They just don't sound right IMHO.

I have a couple of very nice sounding 1x10 combos. And I sold a couple of lovely sounding old 15W 10" Celestions to a mate who uses them in his old Marshall 4x10 cab. (Alongside the two identical drivers he already had - manufactured the very same week = a perfect match!). That 4x10 is one of the very best sounding guitar cabs ever - no messing!!!

Looks to be a potentially nice wee amp though that Marshall. Will have to try one someday.
Funny though how the current amp manufacturer bandwagon seems to be for little 5ish Watt amps these days. I guess it isn't too hard to design a little single ended class A one valve output section, add your own style preamp and stick it in a cute retro box! But they are still going to be way too loud for living / bedroom use when anything like cranked. I guess we'll be seeing a trend towards lots of 1/2 to 1 Watt combos coming in the next few years when more people realise that...

I was just thinking that. My first tube amp was a 100W Mesa Stiletto Mk1 monster. After 2 years of never being able to play it in my house, I decided it was time for a change and my very wise buddy sent me hunting for low wattage amps...
...voila Orange TT. So Mesa Stiletto/Marshall 412 --> Orange TT/Avatar 112.
That little Marshall looks pretty similar and worth checking out. Kinda neat.

It works basically like a standby-switch, but it's a pot. This way you can crank your amp at every wattage you want. Roaring powertubes at bedroom level or at gig level if needed. And your tubes don't wear like they would when you use an attenuator.
Don't know how it affects the sound, but after all, it just cuts the juice to the tubes so they saturate quicker, so I think it will be minimal.
I play bass.
that amp looks freaking killer awesome and from those youtube clips above it sounds amazing, but we can't really rely on that stuff.

Yeah, I'm aware of power scaling. Like most other approaches (eg MV or attenuator solutions) it can apparently work pretty well. But it can't solve all sonic problems. For example the output transformer of the amp will never work hard let alone get near saturating, and the OT is a REALLY big part of the sound of a hard driven valve output section. On that score attenuators have it. But in other ways, yes, it is a really interesting approach - very neat!tony_clifton wrote:Check this out Andy: http://www.londonpower.com/pscaling.htm

Still think there is a strong argument for getting an amp of the appropriate sort of wattage in the first place though, rather than having to shackle a too powerful one...

I think 5W is a good level for home use, but again, it all depends on your situation and how loud you like to crank it at home, how much gain you like, etc. For my tastes, 5W is a good level for getting crunch at a reasonable volume at home (don't get me wrong, my wife WILL hear it in the other room... but that's fine!).

I have a 20 watt Marshall Lead 20 1x10 solid state amp I've been using at home (and a few early gigs) for the last 20 years. That little amp rocks! Not a lick of trouble... ever. I may buy this just based on the cool factor! As said above, a very cool go-to amp.

I just saw their ad in this months issue of Guitar World (the one with Neil Young on the front, and mind you that guy has a ridiculous guitar setup...)
I'm interested to hear the ability of these amps but honestly the name and the goals and ideas of being an "all around great amp at everything" kinda reminds me of most of the amps out there today. Mediocre at a lot of things, king of nothing.

No standby switch?
I guess we'll live with cathode stripping of the power tube.
