Too many good amps!

Post by Duppy03 » Wed May 27, 2009 12:51 pm

So i've been looking to get an Orange and was pretty certain a Thunderverb 50 was the one for me, but then started looking into the AD30 and that too became one I had to try.

I've been looking round a little more and now have been blown away by the Custom Shop AD50 and OR50 heads. Trouble I can't find much in the way of demos to sample their sounds. Anyone used them or have any opinions on them?

The 40th Anniversary OR50 looks great too. Am I right in thinking it has a seperate volume control for both the pre amp and the power amp?

If you know where I can find some sound samples point me in the right direction.

I thought the AD30H looked great too (heven't had the opportunity to try one yet) but i've read some reviews saying theat once you've tried the AD50 it makes the AD30 sound lik Sh*t (not my opinion, just repeating what I read) which ahs got me really intrigued to try one.

Man, wish I could! Gonna have a look on the sound samples page (which I find a bit of a minefield) to see if there are any AD30, Retro 50 and AD50 clips.

There aren't a lot of OR50 demos, but I'd say this one is the closest to how it sounds to me when playing mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecoQ0Bmsoqs. Adrian starts playing about half way through the video.

I have and AD15/12 and I love it for what it does, Its not going to do hard rock, metal etc. I use it at churches and playing classic rock. I can see where someone might say the AD50 make the AD30 sound like sh*t, if you going for anything over classic rock. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong) but the AD30 and AD15 have EL84 power tubes the AD50 has EL34.. both amps going to have a different feel to it. Im my experience EL34 amps have more chugg/tighter low end than amps with EL84. Keep in mind i've never played of heard the AD50 so use a couple grains of salt with this.

I think the AD140HTC was one of my fav Orange heads for that more vintage tone. It had some great snarl too it and a nice thumpy low end. I think it sounded a hell of a lot better than my AD30TC combo. Clearer and crisper. But missing that mid-range honk that I love.

The BEST Orange I've owned played was the Rockerverb100 (RV100H). It sounds fantastic and gives you a good blend of modern and vintage tones.

I'd love to play an AD50.... oh would I love it!
