Pedal effects with tiny terror

FX and TT
Go for Drive pedals with a TT rather than Distortion IMO.
I have a TT Combo , X3 Live and 98 Les Paul and
I use the Line 6 Pod X3 Live with NO amp or Cabs selected
I use the TT for the amp and cab sound and do not use the Pod amps or cabs
as this really muddies up the sound if used in combination with a real amp and cab if that makes sense?
I have set up presets in the X3 with various delays, mod pedals , comp/boost,
stomps etc. only (no cabs or amp models), and I can switch the FX in and out on the X3 itself
I recently bought an El.Harmonix Metal Muff with Top Boost pedal
and went to heaven!
Lots of variations with just this stompbox alone and the TT , from scooped dark metal to crunch to 80's solo sounds to blues / punk / rock...
Also you can run everything on the TT fully juiced and just turn it all down on the Muff pedal volume, giving you full hi-gain sounds at tiny volumes
I then tried the Metal Muff looped into the X3's FX loop and discovered Nirvana! (the place not the band)
-now excuse me I need to keep playing - oops there goes another finger

I've been pretty against pedals for a while. Not boycotting them, but I really wanted an amp with a great crunch all on it's own, and, honestly, I was afraid to get into pedals because they're expensive and I've heard once you pop you can't stop .
That being said, I decided that I wanted to work out a clean/dirty set up for my TT. I loved the Crunch it got (i've got a 12au7 in V1 so it's not as fuzzy), but wanted to have both sounds.
I looked at a tone of overdrive/boost/distortion pedals (zvex SHO, SDHO 2 in 1 and Box of Rock, Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive, LovePedal Eternity, Keeley Katana, Xotic Effects AC Boost, Fulltone OCD) and ended up settling on Xotic's RC Boost.
I had it out in a band situation yesterday for the first time and LOVED it. It just pushes the amp into it's own distortion without doing anything for the tone really (i add a bit of treble), with the amp settings basically straight up, 'cept the Gain which sits at around 1 oclock.
Just the perfect amount of crunch and backs down to just a nice, fat clean.
Dude. That's my suggestion.
