Orange Ad30HTC With Alnico Blues/Golds (vox)
I have a Custom(white) Avatar 2x12 cab with Celestion G12T75 and a G12t100.... and i hate it.
i think the cab is beautiful but the tone im not happy with. Im playing a Les Paul Gibson studio through an Orange AD30htc.
Im looking for more of an Edge(U2) sound. He runs a Vox AC30... So i am thinking of putting Alnico Blues or Golds in my Avatar. I know Orange heads are very different than Vox... But im looking for something in between and wondering what your thoughts on this. I have a plave to get a great price on the alnico speakers. I also know Orange chose vintage 30's for their 2x12 ad30. But i like both sounds. is that too greedy? or am i going to be disappointed.
i think mixing them would be a good idea...
im playing rhythm with a gibson(p490t and 498) im thinking of putting classic 57's in.

I think that would get you closer than the speakers you have now. The edge's tone is a bit convoluted and left to guessing mystery these days, but I think that it's a bit of clean driving speakers to breakup, that's where you get the crunchy-chime stuff.
I don't think it's the only way to do it, but it could work. I'd also look into Ted Weber's speakers (http://www.weber.com) and see if you can't save some bucks by going with Ted's AlNiCo speakers.

Personally, I didn't like the Alnico Blues with the 3 Oranges I've owned.
The amps with those speakers were just too muddy. The Blues really emphasised the Orange mids and they didn't chime like they do in a Vox.
Everyone says "the Blues have a really nice top end chime"...but they only have that in bright circuits like a VOX or a Marshall 18/30 circuit!
If you want really nice clarity with a good all round sound both clean and distorted go for Celestion Century Vintage speakers.
I have them in all my amps now and the blues sit in their boxes.

Go with some regualr ole greenback reissues or Eminence Private Jacks. Or if you have the $$, 65 watt Scumnico's by the Scumback Guy at SouthBay Ampworks. Amazing higher wattage alnico speaker. Blows away the Blues and Golds.

I've been curious about the "weber blue dogs" myself since the recommendation on www.eurotubes.com

I run my AD30HTC with 2 Weber blue dogs 30W ea. and I'm really happy with the tone. I've also giged with one blue dog and a Celestion G1230H and I liked the combination quite a bit.

How don't you like your sound at the moment? How do you want it to change? Brighter? Smoother? Bassier? etc.
Those T75s are junk as speakers, the T100s I rate, but are quite bright and edgey (not U2) sounding sometimes.
How do you have your amp set up? What EQ and gain settings?
Let's talk about that before suggesting new speakers...
